Shipyard Golf Club was the host course for the seventh tournament of the season for the Golfweek Amateur Tour Hilton Head-Savannah Tour. We expected to see gators galore but with the temperature close to 90*, it was simply to hot from them to come out and play. But the heat didn’t stop 25 golfers from playing in the sun for five hours.
The Championship flight saw five players take to the course to battle it out for the first place prizes. With only ten strokes separating the players, it was a great round of golf. In the end, David Politi was able to hold off the rest of the golfers to secure the win. David posted a solid round of 75 to beat Chris Burnett (77), Adam Dozier (79), Stephen Dye (82) and Justin Wylie (85). Nice rounds by all the champ players.
The A flight saw Mike Peters and Jeff Jordan go head to head. Mike used a great round of 76 to best Jeff by four. Mike continued his winning ways by winning a Srixon golf towel in the drawing. Mike uses the 450 points to inch closer to Mark Harrison in the season long points standings.
The B flight saw 13 players come out and play. With the course playing tough, we saw players post rounds between 80 and 99 today. Devon Melone has been playing some solid golf lately and posted a round of 80 to take home the top spot. Following close behind him was Taron McKowen (81), Adam Gray (82), Craig Ehde (82) and the ever consistent Pat Helm (82).
The C flight saw a first time winner break through and take home the top spot. Jess Haynes was able to hold off three time winner Mike Kline 88-90 today. Jess also won a skin and closest to the pin making today a special day. Congratulations Jess on the win!
Just when I thought we were going to break our playoff streak, we have had at least one in every tournament so far this year, the D flight came through to keep the streak alive! George Story and Glen Cunningham both finished the day all square. So off to a playoff they went. It took two holes before George was declared the winner. This is Back-to-Back wins for George!
Our next tournament is in three weeks, April 30th, at Island West Golf Course in Bluffton. Sign up early to make sure your name is on the tee sheet. With only 10 events left, every point is important.
Also, don’t forget about the 2-man fun scramble we are having on April 16th. We will play a little golf, have a little fun and talk about the tour and next year. So please email me if you are wanting to play.
