Charleston and Hilton Head/Savannah golf tours met together for the first of three times this year at the hidden gem in Furman SC, Penny Branch Golf Club. The weather was perfect, the course was in great shape and the greens were easily the finest and fastest we have played on this year. We had a combined group of 52 golfers to start the day on both the 1st and the 10th tees.
The Championship flight saw a close battle between two of Hilton Heads best golfers; Adam Dozier and Vince Davis. Adam was able to hold off Vince and take home his second major of the year by firing a 76 on the day. Adam posted three birdies on his way to his 2 shot victory over Vince Davis, who carded a spectacular four birdies. When asked about the round Adam stated "It was a good day until the last three holes when I went four over."
The A flight saw a group of ten take to the links with Mike Peters of Hilton Head firing 77 to edge two Charleston Golfers by 2 shots. Mark Ducker and Dan Wanner both shot 79 with Mark securing second place on the scorecard playoff. Mike tied Vince Davis for the most birdies of the day posting four himself. Congratulations on a great round Mike.
The B flight had 19 golfers competing for the honor of Major Victor. A lot of golfers posted great nine hole scores but in the end, it was Tim Sumption surviving the slick greens with an 83. George King who won the last event at Penny branch came in second with a solid 85 beating out Mark Morris on a score card playoff.
The C flight saw another HH/Sav golfer take the honors as John Donat posted a rock solid 86 to beat Todd saylor by a single shot.
The D flight produced the Charleston Area Player Of The Week. Mike Miller posted a very nice 89 to win the flight as well as P.O.W. honors. Mike posted two birdies in his round including a spectacular tee shot on the island green. It turns out he needed both of those birds as Brian Gale and Ashley Rogers finished with nice rounds of 90 and 91 respectively.
In the end it was a nice competition between the two tours. The Hilton Head-Savannah tour took the edge over the Charleston tour by winning 3 of the 5 flights. I’m sure the competition will only heat up at Island West in April.
The next event for Charleston is at Berkeley Country Club on the 26Th of March. The next event for the Hilton Head-Savannah tour will be March 26th at Old South. Be sure to sign up early.
