Joe Jaspers, Steve Evans, Aaron Allee, CJ Hutchens, and Traci Taylor all won
the 22nd Annual Southern Icebreaker at Robert Trent Jones & Harbour Town Golf Links!
The 2025 Golfweek Amateur Tour Season officially opened with the 22nd Annual Southern Icebreaker. Members representing 27 local tours from across the country travelled to Hilton Head, South Carolina to play Palmetto Dunes Plantation (Robert Trent Jones) and Sea Pines Resort (Harbour Town Golf Links). Competition among the sell-out field of 128 participants did not disappoint and each of the five flight winners punched their ticket to the 2025 National Championship this October!
Legendary names in the Championship Flight went head-to-head on the course. Jeff Wong, two-time National Champion from Hilton Head/Savannah, posted a 74 on the Jones course putting him one stroke behind the leader after the first day and in the running for his fourth consecutive win at the Southern Icebreaker. However, when Harbour Town played tough for Wong, Joe Jaspers, five-time Charlotte City Amateur Champion and seven-time National Champion stayed focused. Jaspers finished with impressive scores of 73-72 for a total of 145 and earned his first-ever win at the coveted Southern Icebreaker. Wong finished second with a score of 152 and one stroke ahead of fellow Hilton Head/Savannah member Andres Lopez. David Schmidt (Charlotte) secured fourth place with a score of 154, while Christian Wakeford (Chicago) and AJ Jackson (Charlotte) tied for fifth, both posting scores of 155.
In the A Flight, Steve Evans (Hilton Head/Savannah) claimed the title back-to-back winner of the Southern Icebreaker with a two-day score of 161 and a narrow margin of one shot over Ryan Melton (Columbia, SC). Scott Ammons (Hilton Head/Savannah) placed third based on the scorecard playoff where he tied Melton’s total of 162. Andy Hovest (Jacksonville, FL), followed closely with a score of 164, and Jon Lyles (Hilton Head/Savannah), rounded out the rankings with a score of 165.
In the B Flight, Aaron Allee of Hilton Head/Savannah secured a three-stroke victory, posting rounds of 86 and 82 for a total of 168. Shawn Cacioppo (Central, NC), and Kenny Price (Tidewater) tied for second place, both finishing at 171. JC Mora, last year's Southern Icebreaker winner, placed fourth, alongside Miegel Mitchell when both Hilton Head players recorded scores of 172.
In the C Flight, CJ Hutchens (Columbia, SC), maintained a commanding lead throughout the competition, finishing with a score of 88-89-177 to secure the victory. Terry Lawson (South Florida Director) claimed second place with a score of 181, while Tim Sayles (Tidewater) followed closely in third with a total of 187. Michael Webb (Atlanta, GA) finished independently in fourth at 190, and Kent Stine (Hilton Head/Savannah) rounded out the top five with 191.
In the D Flight, Traci Taylor (Arkansas) secured the crystal after leading the field wire-to-wire with her two-day total of 185. Sam Stewart (Eastern North Carolina) finished in solo second place with a score of 194, followed closely by James Waddell (Nashville) with a total of 196. Chris Webb (Atlanta, GA) placed fourth with a 201. Additionally, Steve Start (Orlando) and Colin Dooley (St. Louis, MO) tied for fifth place, both finishing with a total of 202.
