This
was a special event with two competitions at the same time. While everyone
competed in the normal flight-based, individual tournament to gain points and a
chance to qualify for the Nationals, each foursome also competed against each
other using the Stableford point system. In the end the team of Kathy Dhanani, Dave Pongrace, Alton Smithand Bob Tallman earned the most
points, a trophy and Edwin Watts gift cards. Way to go!
The
Championship Flight was a small one this week. Van Stemple won first place by scoring 78. He beat Jerry Resh by three strokes. Although
Van has earned many trophies, this is the first one he has taken home as a
Championship Flight winner. Congratulations Van on the win and for advancing to
your new flight!
Playoffs
in the A Flight are becoming a regular event. This time Joe Henson competed against Dave
LaPierre after both members shot an 81. In the end, Joe Henson took first
place and won his first tournament on the DC Metro Tour—way to go Joe! John Weitz finished in third place with
his 83 and Robert Kulbacki from the
Philly Metro Tour earned fourth after carding an 86.
B
Flight player, Bob Tallman was on
fire this tournament and led the field with a final score of 79. Bob’s
back-to-back birdies on numbers 5 and 6 helped him win the tournament and
helped his foursome win the Stableford contest. In the meantime, second place
went to Harry Sherman and his score
of 83. Steve Stewart placed third with an 88 and was followed closely by Azim Dhanani with an 89.
For
the first time this season, co-director Tim
Newman took home the trophy for the C Flight. Tim scored an 89 and edged
out both Cephas Franklin and Ron Mahanes when they both shot 91.
Cephas also earned a new knickname during the tournament—you can now refer to
him as “Big Peach.” Fourth and fifth place was another tie, this time between Don Stackhouse and Kathy Dhanani and their score of 92.
Don Cherry shot a 96 and earned himself
first place in the D Flight. This is Don’s second time winning the trophy and
has him sitting in second place in the overall points standings. Karl Yergey finished second place with
a 102 but is currently slightly ahead of Don in the overall standings. Bertram Reed (104), Daniel Delmore (105) and James Briggs (106) were third, fourth
and fifth place respectively.
