A beautiful day in the neighborhood...FINALLY!
The tournament at Virginia Oaks on Saturday, May 21st
enabled participants to finally play
a great course WITHOUT rain! Unfortunately for some, this also meant there was
no “excuse” for high scores! For everyone’s sake, we hope this marks a turning
point for the DC Metro Area; the end of the cold/rain and the start of true
golfing weather!
As for the results of the tournament, Myron Gibert carded
the winning score of 84 for the A Flight. In true golfing fashion, he was not
satisfied with his score and said, “could have been better ... it is never good
enough ... there is always room to be better.” While this may be true, we hope
Myron is proud of his trophy and enjoys this win. Close behind Myron was
two-time Flight A winner, Eric Fryatt with a score of 87 followed at 90 by Rex
Close.
Also finishing the round with an 84 was Stan Boyer,
representing the B Flight. Stan is a member of the Tidewater Tour and joined us
for the day by taking advantage of the ability to play in other cities as a
member of the GolfWeek Amateur Tour. Billy Lackey scored an 89 giving him second
place in his first event of the season (not too shabby) we hope to see him in the
future! In third place was Dan Pastorek with a 90. Congratulations Dan for
making the top three for the first time this season!
Mark Kopasz once again took first place in the C Flight—this
is both good and bad news (he has won four out of the five tournaments so far
this season). Starting next tournament, Mark will move up a flight and begin
competing in Flight B. Willie Winfree
will no longer have to worry about placing second to him (as he did for the
second time at Virginia Oaks when they both shot a 95 in the tournament). A few
other members will also switch flights for the next tournament which will make
things even more interesting in the future! Please keep in mind that movement
within flights is “intended to group players into flights of
comparable potential ability and promote fair competition within the flight.” Feel
free to contact Tim Newman (dc@amateurgolftour.net)
with any questions or issues and view the Tour Manual for more details.
For the D Flight, the women led the pack
this week with Lynette Fitzgerald taking first place with a score of 95 and
Paula Harris in second with a 100. Just for your reference, the women hit from
the same tees as the men in this flight due to the stated distances in the Tour
Manual and the tee box distances at the course. Congratulations to Lynette and
Paula as well as third place winners Shawn Doyle and Greg Wentzel (tied with a
score of 103).
Our next tournament is at Maryland National and we look
forward to seeing as many of the members there as possible! Remember, to
qualify for the National Tournament in Hilton Head as part of the DC Metro Tour
you need to participate in at least 6 local tournaments during the season...more
details to come in the near future!
