The Links at Challedon proved more difficult than expected...lots of close scores resulted!
The Links at Challedon provided lots of excitement for participants of the Golfweek Amateur Tour this weekend! The weather was beautiful and the course played a bit more difficult than expected. Although the field was small due to many people’s holiday and travel plans, those in attendance enjoyed some stiff competition.
In fact, two of the four flights were won during playoff holes: Flight C and Flight D. The C Flight was close; after 18 holes Mike Lenett and Grady Yue were tied for first at 93 while Cephas Franklin and David Hutchinson tied with 94. After a tough playoff hole, Mike Lenett came through with the win and Grady Yue gained some valuable experience in the process. Congratulations to all of the C Flight players for a great round of golf!
As for the D Flight, Greg Wentzel and Dennis Kapoyos returned to the course for a playoff after they finished the original round tied with a score of 104. At the end of the day, Greg was excited to hold his trophy and gift certificate when he edged out Dennis by just one stroke. Special congratulations to Greg for his first win of the season...it was a tough way to get it but as he said, it sure provides motivation to keep playing in the future!
A Flight winner, Myron “Keith” Gibert smiled from ear to ear when he came into the clubhouse and realized he won the tournament! He shouldn’t have been so surprised at the outcome considering he was even through the first SEVEN holes! In the end, his 85 beat Kerry Koehler's 87, Thomas Grillo's 88 and David LaPierre's 89—again it was close competition out there!
Yet again, the winner of the B Flight came down to just one stroke...Jerry Abernathy's 86 was one better than Stan Boyer's 87 which was one better than Dorinda Pastorek's 88...getting the trend here? The remaining scores were still close with nobody in the flight finishing more than two strokes behind the person ahead of them. Way to go golfers!
An indication of the way the course played was the fact that there weren’t any skins in either the C or D flights. Furthermore, two of the par 3 holes closest to the pin winners came from the very last group of the day (they were the only ones to hit the green)! Closest to the pin winners were David LaPierre (#5), Allen Bailey (#7), Dennis Kapoyos (#12) and Rod Glitz (#14). The carryover for skins will make the next tournament even more interesting! In the meantime, special mention goes to the big winner of the B Flight, Kal Guraya, for taking the entire skins pot with his birdie on #16.
Keep in mind the next tournament is a major with double points The Jeff Ault Memorial Tournament at Rock Harbor will be held on Saturday, July 23rd and registration closes at midnight on Tuesday, July 19th. Jeff's unexpected passing has left a mark on DC Metro Tour members and it is only fitting to honor him by renaming the event (especially since it was the first course Jeff played with us last year). Thanks to our partnership with GolfBalls.com we will also be holding a special raffle at this event...hope to see you all there!
