As the saying goes, “April showers bring May flowers” but
nobody said anything about sleet and snow! Today’s golfers experienced it all
at the cPRIME Championship at Blue Ridge Shadows in Front Royal, Virginia. Returning
member and Flight A winner, Van Stemple
summed up the feelings of many when he said, “It was tough out there today with
the wind and cold, not to mention the rain and snow.” After posting a score of
80, Van said the camaraderie brought him back this season, “I love the
competition and everybody is great, everyone has fun, you run a great show.”
The DC Metro’s opening event, sponsored by local tour member
Ivan Monagan, was a huge success
with prizes awarded to both first and second place winners in four flights.
Featuring a mix of new faces and members from last year’s inaugural season, Jerry Abernathy’s enthusiastic “I did
it BABY...Wahoo!” summed up the feelings of many who also shared the Flight B
winner’s love of the competitiveness of the tour.
Mark Kopasz,
expressed the thoughts of many first-time competitive golfers when he said, “I
was just glad that I didn’t have any huge blow-up holes!” He was surprised to
learn he won the C Flight with a score of 86 and commented upon how much he
enjoyed the good time and felt the tour provides participants with “a great way
to connect with others, some people you know already...others you’ve never met.”
Mark was joined by three other new DC Metro tour members: Paula Harris took second place in the D flight, Dennis Goodwin secured second place in
flight C and Eric Fryatt also placed
number two in the A flight.
Barry McConnell agreed
and said he keeps coming back (this is his 4th season playing with
the Tidewater Tour) because the challenging tournament style of golf brings out
the best in people. From McConnell’s perspective, “it sure feels great to get a
win...it comes down to the survival of the fittest.” Barry certainly enjoys the
benefits of membership and plays on a variety of Golfweek Amateur Tour events
in different cities. Next stop on the DC Metro area is April 16th at
Montgomery County’s Northwest course.
