Keeping with the norm on the Hilton Head-Savannah Tour, playoffs were again the story of the day. Old South Golf Club in Bluffton was the host course for the sixth tournament of the year for the Golfweek Amateur Tour.
The Championship Flight saw five guys come to the course ready to compete. Danny Nash and David Politi both walked off the first 18 with 3-over par 75’s on the day. Danny played well all round long but three putted the last hole to give him a 75. David was solid all round long and card a great 75 to force a playoff. Off to hole #1 they went. It only took one playoff hole to secure a winner. David came in to claim his first place trophy and points. Congratulation David on a great round. Rounding out the top three was Chris Burnett with his 78 today.
The A flight was the smallest of the day with only two golfers competing. Mark Harrison and Jeff Jordan battled all round long side by side. For a while there it was back and forth between the two. But in the end Mark was able to hold off the final charge from Jeff and secure a three shot win (77 to 80). Mark takes home the first place prizes and is working his way up the leaderboard.
The B flight was the biggest flight of the day with 11 golfers playing. So you might be able to figure out what happened. You guessed it, another playoff. Craig Ehde and Devon Melone both came in with 81’s on the card. After sitting around for a bit and waiting for all the B flighters to come in, off they went to play a few more holes. It took two playoff holes to determine the winner; and that winner was Devon. Devon scored a par on the second hole to secure the win. Rounding out the top three was Mark Morris with his 82.
The C flight saw four golfers take the course. Half of those golfers went into a playoff. Mike Kline and Todd Saylor both came in with a score of 86 to force a playoff. This playoff only lasted one hole before Mike was declared the winner. This is Mike’s second win of the season. He continues to be a factor in each and every tournament he plays in. Finishing third was KC Andrews (91) and newcomer to the C flight, Brain Gale finishes fourth.
The D flight saw fiver player battling it out. With Brain Gale moving up to the C flight, the D flight was ready for a new winner. George Story was that face. George put together a very solid round to secure a two shot victory over Patrick Jones. George also won a skin, a super skin and closest to the pin today. Not bad for a first time winner.
With the NCAA Tournament going on as well, we decided to have a March Madness theme for this event. Many of the golfers came decked out in their favorite college attire. But one golfer stood out amongst the rest. That was Nicholas Gerstner. Nicholas came decked out in his Ohio State Buckeyes clothes and stood proud (even after they were beaten on Friday). Nicholas was voted as most school spirit and won his skins and pins paid for at his next tournament.
We also had our first 50/50 drawing of the year to raise money for a donation to Stand Up To Cancer. Winning the drawing today was none other than Keith Weaver (thank you KC Andrews for pulling that winning ticket). We will continue to have these 50/50 drawings for the rest of the season. Please buy some tickets at the start of your round and we will pull the winner while everyone is playing.
Our next tournament is on April 9th at Shipyard on Hilton Head Island. Sign up soon to secure your spot in the tournament. We are currently 1/3 of the way through our season. With points on the line and only 2/3 of a season left, it is starting to get a little tight in the races.
