For the past four years. The Golfweek Amateur Tour
has started its local season at Savannah Quarters Country Club. The previous
three years have been some of the harshest weather conditions we have ever
played in. That was NOT the case for this event. The weather was perfect, the
sun was shining and the birds were chirping. Maybe that’s why all the flight
winners were newcomers to the tour J
The Championship flight saw Alex Mihai and Matt
Eisenmenger battle it out for 18 holes. Alex used two birdies on the back nine
to help secure a two stroke victory over Matt. Alex posted a solid 77 to take
home the victory in his first tournament.
The A flight saw some great golf played by the top
three. With 16 players in the flight, it was bound to be an interesting day.
Luke Welsing shot the low round of the tournament by firing a 74 on the day.
That round was just one stroke better than Carson Hunt (75) who was the
clubhouse leader for most of the day. Coming in third was Randy Dees with a
solid 78.
The B flight was the largest flight of the day with
18 players set to bring home the trophy. In the end there could only be one
right? Well in this case there were two. Newcomer Bubba Aspinwall and Aaron
Tanner were both tied for first place. Usually we have an on course playoff to
determine the winner. However, both players had already left. With that we used
a scorecard playoff to determine the winner. Congratulations to Bubba for
winning his first event of the year. Coming in third was Paul McGee and Andre
Hilton with 86’s on the card.
The C flight had an impressive field of 15 players
today. And it too took extra holes to determine a winner. Ron Hunter was the
clubhouse leader for most of the day. Noel Coolican was in the last C flight
group and when his card was turned in, it was playoff time. The playoff only
took one hole before Ron was declared the winner. Coming in third was Matt
Nemes with an 87 on the day.
The D flight had some drama right to the last hole.
Holding a one stroke lead going into 18 was Tom Arledge over Doug Pearson
(thanks to live scoring we were able to keep up with the results). Tom
struggled on the last hole and ended up placing second behind Doug.
Congratulations Doug on the victory.
We would like to thank everyone for coming out to
play today. It was the largest season opener we have ever had (59). I look
forward to more players and larger tournaments as the year goes on. I also want
to thank everyone for using the Golf Gamebook live scoring app. I think this is
going to be a lot of fun this year.
We look forward to seeing everyone at the Country
Club of Hilton Head this Saturday March 14th. Don’t forget to sign
up!
