The GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour (Philly Metro) was challenged by the classic Donald Ross designed Lulu Country Club on Saturday July 11th, 2015. Forty-four members in five flights competed on a sunny pleasant afternoon on the mature tree-lined golf course. Lulu Country Club opened in 1918 on what was once rolling farmland and forest. It features several water hazards, tight driving areas, mounds and grass bunkers and fast contoured greens.
In the Championship Flight, Gary Greenberg (77, 35-42) and Paul Yun (77, 40-37) went to a 1-hole playoff. Greenberg won with a Par 4 on the 8th hole, the designated playoff hole. Alex Hargaden (80, 39-41), visiting from the North Central Florida Tour, and Albie Sanguiliano (80, 38-42) tied for 3rd place. The CHAMP Flight played the back tees at 6,433 yards.
The A Flight victory went to Bob Hobson (76, 38-38); Bob has won his past three starts on tour! Mark Monkhouse (78, 37-41) was two-strokes back in 2nd place. Michael Dupree (79, 38-41) and new member Tom Smith (79, 40-39) tied for 3rd place. A Flight also played the back tees.
The B Flight title went to Steve Mumford (79, 38-41) who returned to the winner’s circle for the first time this season. Dave Taylor (81, 37-44) and Jim Boyce (81, 40-41) we tied for 2nd place. Boyce took 2nd place on a match-of-cards. The B Flight played middle tees at 6,132 yards.
In The C Flight, Dave Neder (90, 42-48) and Robert Stillman (90, 44-46) went to a playoff to determine the winner. Neder claimed the title on the 2nd playoff hole with a Par 4. Assistant Director Leo Cassidy was two-strokes back in 3rd place after posting a 92 (44-48). C Flight played from the middle tees.
The D Flight winner was Sean Matthews (95, 43-52) who won a hard fought battle with Ken Wilson (97, 49-48). The D Flight also played the middle tee boxes.
The golf course was in excellent condition for our tournament. Special thanks to Head Golf Professional John Rusk and his staff for their assistance during the tournament. The event raised $90 for the GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour’s charity partner, Stand Up 2 Cancer.
Our next tournament is at the private Radley Run Country Club in West Chester, PA on Saturday July 25, 2015. Tee times start at 12:00 PM and the event fee is $130.00. Hope to see you there!
