Mountain Valley Golf Club in the scenic countryside near Barnsville, PA was the tournament venue for the GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour (Philly Metro) 2-Day Tour Major tournament on Saturday June 27th & Sunday July 28th, 2015. A field of forty tour members completed the front-nine holes on the Mountain Course in extremely difficult stormy conditions on Saturday, and then returned to the course on Sunday to play the remaining nine holes on Mountain, followed by the entire Valley Course.
The original Mountain Valley course, designed by David Gordon, opened in 1970. The course was redesigned in 1997 by Ault, Clark & Associates, with the addition of nine new holes. In 2009 an additional nine holes designed by Brain Ault course opened. Mountain Valley Golf Club now features two unique and different golf courses, The Mountain and The Valley, carved through the forests of Broad Mountain, overlooking the Locust Valley.
In the Championship Flight, Albie Sanguiliano took the title by one-stroke with a two-day total of 162 (83-79), to nip Kyle Mazza (163, 82-81). The CHAMP Flight played from “the tips” both days.
The A Flight winner was Dave Upchurch (165, 83-82) by four-strokes over Robert Kulbacki (169, 90-79). The A Flight also played from “the tips” on the GOLD tees both days.
In the B Flight, Jim Boyce came out victorious in a close battle over the two days. Boyce posted 174 (88-86) to defeat Brian Lynch (176, 87-89) by two-strokes. Ron Pace (178, 88, 90) was another two-strokes back. The B Flight played from the BLUE tees both days.
The C Flight champion was Steve Winnick (170, 89-81) in a runaway over Assistant Director Leo Cassidy (188, 98-90). With the victory, Winnick returned to the B Flight. Another seven-strokes back in 3rd place was Dave Neder (195, 96-99). The C Flight played WHITE tees both days.
In the D Flight, visiting DC Metro member Brett Johnson won a close battle. Johnson posted a two-day total of 197 (103-94) to edge Sean Matthews (201, 103-98) by four-strokes. The D Flight had the worst of the extreme Saturday conditions to deal with during their play, also from the WHITE tees both days.
Everyone enjoyed the opportunity to play on such fun and challenging golf course. Special mention goes to the Director Of Golf, John Rizzo, and his staff at Mountain Valley, who provided our group with exemplary service and made the entire experience a most enjoyable one. We would also like to commend Janine Murray and her staff at MainStay Suites in Barnsville, where the group stayed.
Our next event on, Saturday July 11th, 2015 is at Lulu Country Club. Designed by Donald Ross and opened in 1918, Lulu is an “old school” design which continues to challenge. Scheduled tee times start at 12:00 PM from the 1st tee. The tournament entry fee is $110.00 and scheduled practice rounds are available. As always, thanks for playing!
