Metro NY vs. Philly Metro

The annual post-season Metro Cup challenge match between the Metro New York Tour and the Philly Metro Tour was held on Saturday September 27th, 2014 at the Royce Brook Golf Club (East) in Hillsborough, NJ. The golf course was designed by Stephen R. Smyers and opened in 1998. The top 20 available players from each tour (4 each from the 5 flights) matched up against each other in 3 different formats: Better-Ball of Partners (9 holes), Modified Alternate Shot (9 holes), and Head-To-Head Singles (9 holes). It was a perfect autumn day for golf, as players competed in the spirited and hard-fought competition.
Philly Metro opened strong in the Better-Ball matches, leading 6 ½ to 3 ½ after the first 9 holes of play, but Metro NY bounced right back in Modified Alternate Shot, winning 5 ½ of the 10 possible points, making the score 11 to 9 in favor Philly Metro at the end of 18 holes. Of note were several Eagle “3’s” in Alternate Shot, from the Clavin/Foss team (MNY) and the O’Neal/Dupree team (PM).
Afternoon Singles play began with a split of the matches in CHAMP Flight, with two games halved, and one win for each side. In the A Flight, Philly Metro secured a point in all four matches, with the final game, a see-saw battle between Dupree and Keiser in which the lead changed 3 different times, coming down to the last hole. With the overall score now 17 to 11 in favor of Philly Metro, it appeared as though the Metro Cup would come to a rather early conclusion.
However, Metro NY staged a major comeback, taking 9 of the 12 available points in the B, C and D Flights. Several of the C and D Flight games were won by convincing margins by the Metro New York players. At the end of the day, Metro New York got to 20 points first, and was on the doorstep of victory, when the final game was won by John Stevens of Philly Metro to secure the tie.
To settle the tie, one player from each side went to a sudden-death playoff. Albie Sanguiliano from the Philly Metro side took the title for his team with a win over Michael Goldfarb of Metro New York on the first playoff hole. It was an exciting scene, as each team followed their player down the fairway and surrounded the green to watch the exciting conclusion.
With the win, Philly Metro retained the Metro Cup. Detailed results of the matches can be found below.
Special mention to undefeated team members Dave Neder (PM) , Kermitt Bowen (MNY) and Michael Tusa (MNY). A fabulous time was had by all on a very enjoyable golf course.
