Philmont Country Club hosted the GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour (Philly Metro) on Saturday May 9th, 2015. Fifty-six tour players in five flights competed on a partly sunny calm afternoon on a unique tournament layout.  Philmont Country Club, which dates to 1906, is a private club in Huntington Valley, PA, with 36 holes in play on 2 different golf courses.  Due to problems related to the recent severe winter, the tournament course we played consisted of nine-holes each from the North and South courses.

In the Championship Flight, Wes Samons (Metro NY) posted a second consecutive victory on our tour with a round of 76 (36-40), that included two great birdies. Paul Yun, a new Philly Metro member, also posted a steady 76 (38-38). In the playoff, both players made a Par 4 on the 1^st. Samons took the title on the Par 4 2^nd after Yun dumped his approach shot into the pond. Doug Hilgenberg (39-40, 79) and Kyle Mazza (39-40, 79) were tied for 3^rd place.

The A Flight victory went to Dave Upchurch, with a fantastic 77 (40-37), which included a birdie on the Par 4 15^th hole. Michael Dupree was two-strokes behind with a 79 (41-38) that included two great birdies. The 3^rd place prize went to Justin O’Neal, who was another stroke back with an 80 (39-41).

In the B Flight, Joe Foley took the honors after a fine round of 85 (45-40), which also included a birdie on the Par 4 15^th hole.  Matt McCormack (46-42, 88) was two-strokes behind Foley in 2^nd place.  Ron Pace (50-39, 89), Ted Mazurek (46-43, 89) and Allen Bailey (44-45, 89) tied for 3^rd place another two-strokes back.  Pace took the 3^rd place prize on a match-of-cards.

The C Flight champion was Mike Marchionda who posted 89 (45-44) out ahead of the field. New member Kurt Lewandowski did his best to catch Mike, but fell one-stroke short and posted a 90 (46-44). There was a tie for 3^rd place between Dave Neder (46-47, 93) and Zach Davis (42-51, 93).

In the D Flight, Sean Matthews bested the field with a winning score of 102 (50-52), to win by three-strokes over George Adams (56-49, 105).  Sean defended his 2014 title at Philmont Country Club.

The Philly Metro Tour season moves to the highly acclaimed High Bridge Hills Golf Club in High Bridge, NJ on Saturday May 23, 2015. A Geoffrey Cornish & Associates design, this municipal course opened in 1999 on spectacular terrain overlooking the beautiful Spruce Run Reservoir.
