Wildwood
Golf & Country Club in scenic Cape May Courthouse, NJ hosted the GOLFWEEK
Amateur Tour (Philly Metro) on Saturday June 28th, 2014. Forty-eight tour
members and four guests made the journey “down the shore” for a fantastic day
of golf on one of the area’s premier private courses. Bright sunshine, clear
skies and pleasant temperatures prevailed throughout the day as our group
competed on the mature tree-lined golf course that dates from 1916. Small fast
greens and numerous water hazards are part of the challenge at Wildwood
G&CC.
In the Championship Flight, 2013 A
Flight National Champion Albie Sanguiliano posted the lowest round of the day
(76, 39-37) from “the tips” playing 6,714 yards. Great playing, Albie!
The A Flight victory went to Darren
Parkes (79, 43-36), who survived a 4-hole playoff against Keith Gibert (79,
37-42). Parkes back-nine even-par 36 included a great birdie on the difficult
par 5 15th hole. Gibert’s front-nine 37 included 3 birdies (one
being an “almost” hole-in-one on the Par 3 5th hole). In the
playoff, both players made par on the first 3 holes. On the Par 4 4th,
Parkes was able to win with a bogey 5 when Gibert struggled to reach the green
in 5 and made a double-bogey 6. George Reby (80, 38-42) was one-stroke shy of the playoff in 3rd
place.
The B Flight title went to Joe Volpe
(83, 38-45) his third consecutive title on tour. Volpe’s round included a great
birdie on the Par 4 8th hole.
Mike Sabbagh (85, 47-38) was two-strokes back in 2nd place.
Joe Foley (85, 46-39) took 3rd place; his round included two
back-nine birdies. Steve Winnick recorded the season’s first “Eagle” when he
holed-out from the fairway for a “2” on the 385 yard Par 4 8th hole – way to go, Steve!
The
C Flight victory went to Sal
Tomczak (91, 45-46), his second consecutive title and third of the 2014 season.
Sal was one stroke ahead of Chris Moore (92, 47-45) and Tom Evancho (92,
44-48). Moore took 2nd place on a match-of-cards. This was Tomczak’s
last event in C Flight; he has accepted a promotion to B Flight for the balance
of the 2014 season.
D Flight honors went to George Adams (84, 40-44) who turned in the low round of
the day from the White Tees, playing 6,157 yards. Luis Feliciano (91, 47-44)
took 2nd place.
Special thanks to Head Golf Professional Fred
Reidel and his staff for their outstanding assistance in ensuring our players
were “members for the day” at Wildwood Golf & Country Club. The event
raised $60 for the GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour’s charity partner, Stand Up 2 Cancer.
Our next tournament is at the private Hopewell Valley Golf Club in Hopewell, NJ
on Saturday July 12th, 2014. Please plan to attend as we continue
our fantastic 2014 season of tournament golf.
