Heron Glen Golf Club - N.J. Public Gem - Joint-Event 08-04-12
Metro NY & Philly Metro GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour members travelled to beautiful Hunterdon County, NJ to challenge the Heron Glen Golf Club on Saturday August 4th, 2012. Forty-two tour members in five flights competed on a mostly sunny and hot afternoon. Heron Glen Golf Club was designed by Dan Schlegel and opened in 2002. The club was built with public funding on the rolling hills and meadows of what was once the Kuster Farm. It features several forced carries over ‘environmental’ hazards and some interesting and challenging hole designs. The golf course was in excellent condition throughout. We proudly welcomed 15 Metro NY GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour members to the tournament.
In the Championship Flight, Gary Greenberg (39-39, 78) needed a 1-hole playoff to claim the victory over runner-up Andrew Neal (38-40, 78) in their head-to-head battle. Neal seemed to have the upper hand, making the turn with a 1-stroke advantage after a great birdie at the Par 4 3rd hole. Neal seemingly had the tournament in hand until the Par 3 17th hole, when he left a bunker shot in the sand and double-bogeyed to even the match. After both making bogey on the 18th, the pair went back to the tee to play the hole again. Greenberg made a nice par save in the playoff for victory after Neal couldn’t get up and down from off the green.
The A Flight victory went to Metro NY member John Weitz, who scorched the course with a 3-over par round of 75 (39-36) for a 1-stroke victory over Philly Metro member Kai Kurylak (76, 38-38). Weitz carded mostly pars throughout the round, with 1 birdie on the Par 5 16th hole. Kurylak’s round included a fantastic eagle ‘2’ on the short Par 4 11th hole, when he knocked his chip shot into the hole from about 65 yards away. John DiValentino, Jr. from the Philly Metro tour was another 3 strokes back in 3rd after a round of 79 (40-39). Congratulations on your fine play, John!
Philly Metro member Steve Mumford claimed his first B Flight title with a 2 stroke victory over local Heron Glen player Kyle Mazza. Steve’s fine round of 82 (39-43) included 1 birdie on the Par 5 8th hole. Mazza seemingly struggled in his round of 84 (42-42), during which he couldn’t find a birdie. Metro NY member Marc Wyttenbach placed 3rd with a round of 85 (45-40) that included 2 birdies.
The C Flight champion was Philly Metro member John Son, who claimed his first GOLFWEEK Am Tour title with a five stroke victory over Ignacio Casares (88, 48-40) and David Neder (88, 44-44). John’s round of 83 (40-43) included 9 pars, 7 bogeys and 2 ‘doubles’.
The D Flight winner was Metro NY member Robert Buss, playing his inaugural event on tour. Robert’s round of 90 (48-42) was five strokes clear of Metro NY member Dennis Ives (95, 50-45).
The event raised $75.00 for the GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour’s charity partner, Stand Up 2 Cancer. Everyone enjoyed the opportunity to play such a well-designed and well-maintained public golf course!
Our next event is a 2-day Tour Major August 11th & 12th, 2012 at two fantastic private country clubs. On Saturday August 11th we play the Meadowlands Country Club in Blue Bell, PA followed by Whitemarsh Valley Country Club on Sunday August 12th. You must register and play both days of this event. The total cost is $250.00 for both days and tee times begin at 12:30 PM.
