Shawnee Resort & Country Club hosted the GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour (Philly Metro) on Saturday June 14th, 2014. Shawnee Country Club, which dates from 1911, was designed by A.W. Tillinghast and opened as a resort course featuring “island golf” in the Pocono Mountains. The Blue and Red nine holes play out and back to a large island in the Delaware River, with numerous hazards and small green complexes throughout. The weather was partly cloudy and pleasant but on the cool side, which made for a great day of tournament golf on a rain-softened course. The field of 52 members and guests made 34 birdies during their rounds.
In the Championship Flight, Andrew Neal (76, 39-37) and Gary Greenberg (76, 39-37) battled to an 18 hole tie, and needed an extra hole to decide the winner. Playing the Par 4 14th hole, Andrew Neal scored a 2-putt par to win the title after Greenberg failed to reach the green in four strokes.
The A Flight victory went to Kyle Mazza (81, 39-42), also in a playoff. Kyle was tied after 18 holes with Ron Pace (81, 42-39). They returned to the course and played the Par 5 1st hole of WHITE. Mazza’s 2-putt Par 5 secured the title when Pace failed to get up-and-down for par. John Sheehan, joining us for the tournament from the Metro NY Tour, took 3rd place with a round of 83 (43-40).
In the B Flight, yet another playoff was necessary to determine a winner. Joe Volpe (80, 41-39) ended regulation play in a tie with Mike Sabbagh (80, 37-43). The two returned to play the Par 4 1st and the Par 5 2nd holes of the tournament course. Both players bogeyed the 1st hole, but on the 2nd hole Volpe managed to get up-and-down from a greenside bunker to secure a Par 5 and take the title. This was Volpe’s second consecutive victory on tour. Jim Boyce, the defending B Flight Champion, took 3rd place with an 84 (45-39), on a match of cards over Steve Sanguiliano (43-41) and Kevin Martyn (41-43).
The C Flight champion was Sal Tomczak (83, 42-41). Sal took his second title of the season by five shots over Michael Marchionda (88, 41-47). Marchionda made a great birdie “2” on the difficult Par 3 7th hole playing over the Delaware River channel with a lengthy putt.
The runaway winner in the D Flight was John Stevens with a fantastic round of 82 (41-41), his best ever score on tour. Congratulations, John!
The event raised $60.00 for the GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour’s charity partner, Stand Up 2 Cancer. Special thanks to Head Golf Professional Joe Manley and his staff at The Shawnee Resort & Country Club for all of their help with the tournament. The golf course was in great shape and a good time was had by all.
The tour moves on to Wildwood Golf & Country Club in Cape May Courthouse, NJ for a golf tournament on Saturday June 28th, 2014. One of the classic “down the shore” private golf courses, Wildwood will provide a great test for our members and guests. Hope to see you there!
