Radley Run Country Club in rural West
Chester, PA was the venue for the GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour (Philly Metro) 2-Day
Tour Major tournament on Saturday July 23 & Sunday July 24, 2016. A field
of forty-four tour members competed on a hot and humid summer weekend, with a
passing strong thunderstorm that delayed Saturday play for one hour. This
bucolic private golf course was designed by Englishman
Alfred Tull, and opened in 1964 on the site of the former Brandywine Hunt Club
property. The course features sweeping vistas of the surrounding horse farm
country, elevation changes, numerous water hazards, and several brilliant
risk-reward holes.
In the Championship Flight, Owen
Brown (77-83, 160) and Gary Greenberg (75-85, 160) needed a two-hole playoff to
decide the winner. After par by both players on the Par 4 1st hole,
Owen took the title on the long Par 5 2nd hole when Greenberg couldn’t
get up-and-down for his par. This was Brown’s first victory on tour. Doug
Hilgenberg (82-87, 169) was 9-strokes back in 3rd place. The CHAMP
Flight played BLUE Tees at 6,810 yards.
The A Flight winner was Mark
Monkhouse (85-83, 168), in a three way playoff, which also included Carl Handwerk
(83-85, 168) and D.C. Metro member A.J. Ayala (88-80, 168). Monkhouse won the
title with a Par 4 on the 1st hole. A.J. Ayala had the low round of
the day from the back tees. The A Flight also played from the BLUE Tees at 6,810
yards.
In the B Flight, John
Freymuller (86-80, 166) returned to the winner’s circle after a great comeback
on Day Two. Playing with the overnight leader Steve Mumford (82-88, 170),
Freymuller took a 1-stroke lead after nine-holes and came home in 39 strokes to
cap an eight-shot swing on Day Two. Mumford took 2nd place and Lou
Parducci (87-85, 172) was another two-strokes back in 3rd place. The
B Flight played WHITE Tees at 6,453 yards.
The C Flight champion was John Son (89-90, 179) who posted a
commanding eleven-stroke victory over Brian Ganley (93-97, 190). Zach Davis
(98-95, 193) was another three-strokes back in 3rd place. The C
Flight also played from the WHITE Tees
at 6,453 yards.
In the D Flight, Philly Metro Director Jeff A. Brodsky (94-91,185) took the
title over Sean Matthews (94-98, 192). Fred Hering (100-95, 195) was another
three-strokes back in 3rd place. The D Flight played GOLD Tees at
6,135 yards.
Everyone
enjoyed the opportunity to play golf on such a pristine and challenging private
golf course. Special mention goes to the Head Golf Professional at Radley Run,
John Kellogg, and his staff, who provided our group with exemplary service and
made the entire experience a most enjoyable one.
Our next event on, Saturday August 6, 2016 is at Brookside (Pottstown) Country
Club. The original design dates to 1916, but the course was redesigned in the
early 1950’s by William and David Gordon. The course features numerous
elevation changes, small water hazards and a variety of challenging holes. Scheduled
tee times start at 12:30 PM from the 1st tee. The tournament entry
fee is $130.00 and scheduled practice rounds are available.
