Scotland Run Golf Club in Williamstown, NJ was the venue for the opening event of the season on Saturday April 27th, 2013. Players from both Metro NY and Philly Metro tours competed on the modern Stephen Kay designed layout, built around a sand quarry in 1989, for trophies in 5 flights. The sunny and bright weather made for an excellent day of competitive golf for the sold-out field of 84 players.
Wes Samons (MNY) took home the trophy in the Championship Flight. Wes shot a steady round of 77 (40-37) from ‘the tips’ of the Par 71 6,810 yard course. His nearest competitor Rick Custer (PM) was two shots back with a 79 (42-37). Wes is now a multiple winner on the GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour.
Joe Arnold, Jr. (MNY) was the winner in the A Flight by 5 strokes over his father. Joe’s round of 73 (36-37) included fourteen pars, one birdie, and three bogeys. Joe Arnold, Sr. finished 2nd with a round of 78 (40-38). Tony White (PM) (78, 39-41) finished third. Joe Arnold, Jr. earned a "battlefield promotion" to the Championship Flight with his fantastic play.
The B Flight winner was subsequently disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard, and first place was declared void. Robert Kulbacki (PM) came in 2nd place with a round of 86 (45-41). A shot further back was Jon DeMinico (PM) with a round of 87 (43-44).
The C Flight trophy went to Rick Perine (MNY) with a round of great round of 83 (41-42). Dave Neder (PM) was six strokes higher at 89 (45-44) for second place. Steve McDonald, Metro NY Asst. Director, took 3rd place on a match of cards with a round of 90 (46-44).
The D Flight champion was Kevin Wagner (PM), with a round of 87 (42-45), that included a birdie on the Par 5 1st hole. Kevin is a former member of the GWAT Charlotte Tour. George Adams (PM) was four strokes back with a 91 (47-44) for second place.
Scotland Run Golf Club’s clubhouse is a great place to relax after golf and enjoy the excellent cuisine and cold beverages. The event raised $ 90.00 for the GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour’s charity partner, Stand Up 2 Cancer
