Reading Country Club Reading, PA
GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour Philly Metro
May 14, 2011
Reading Country Club in Reading, PA, a classic Alexander Findlay design from 1923, was the venue for the GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour Philly Metro tournament on May 14, 2011. Twenty-two tour members in five flights competed on an overcast afternoon with passing light rain showers. The golf course was in excellent condition with fast greens and challenging rough, thanks to Director Of Golf Tom Morgan and his capable staff. Reading Country Club, rich with history, remains a true classic. The club’s Head Golf Professional for 4 years was none other than Byron Nelson (1937 – 1941). The event raised $145.00 for the GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour’s charity partner, Stand Up 2 Cancer.
In the Championship Flight, Jerry Newell won a 1-hole playoff with a Par 4 on the 1st Hole to beat James Grosso. Both players shot a stellar round of 75, which was 5 over par on the Par 70 course. Newell’s steady round included pars on 13 holes and no score higher than bogey. Grosso’s round included a birdie on the Par 4 9th hole and a tremendous eagle on the Par 5 14th hole when he holed a 50-foot putt; he also carded two double-bogies during his round. Gregory Heisen placed third with a fine round of 78, which included birdie 3’s on both the 9th and 18th holes.
In the A Flight, Fred Hartwell won with a fine round of 79. Second place went to Bob Hobson, two strokes back with an 81. Hartwell’s steady round included four pars in the first five holes. Dennis Begley made a fine birdie on the Par 5 17th hole in his round of 88 to place third.
The B Flight champion was Nate Oxman with a stellar round of 84. Two players tied for second with a 91; Jim Boyce took 2nd place on a scorecard playoff. Don Mackey, who had also tied for second, made a fine birdie 3 on the 1st hole. The 3rd place score was shot by Kevin Cockerham with a 93.
In the C Flight, two players battled head to head for the trophy. John Stevens bested Ken Wilson by 6 strokes to secure the title, with a round of 94. John made an incredible birdie on the 15th hole, the most difficult Par 3 on the course, with a hybrid club from 187 yards that finished very close to the hole.
The D Flight champion was Dan Carter who carded a round of 91. Kyle Mazza, who took 2nd place with a round of 94, birdied the Par 3 eight hole.
