Galloway National Golf Club Challenges Metro NY & Philly Metro Tour Members 08-20-11
Galloway National Golf Club in Galloway, NJ, a Tom Fazio design ranked in the TOP 50 private courses in America, was the venue for our tournament on Saturday August 20, 2011. 21 members and 3 guests from both the Metro NY and Philly Metro tours competed for trophies in 3 flights. Under bright sunny skies with breezy conditions and the temperature in the low 80’s (perfect golf weather!) our members enjoyed their rounds on this great private golf course. The course played extremely difficult, with the combination of fast greens and deep waste bunkers proving to be a tremendous challenge for the field.
World renowned golf-course architect Tom Fazio meticulously crafted Galloway National’s 7000+ yards out of a 200 acre tract of heavily wooded, gently sloping bayside property near Atlantic City, NJ. The course features natural contour changes, tees and greens with breathtaking views, and challenging hazards as it winds through pine forest, sand and water on the bay side overlooking the distant Atlantic Ocean. Galloway National Golf Club’s Director Of Golf Mike Killian and his staff made certain that their championship golf course was in immaculate condition for our event.
Wayne Mulato from the Metro NY Tour took home the trophy in the A Flight. Without the benefit of a single birdie, Wayne managed a 2-over par 37 on the front-nine, and then (in his own words) "held on for dear life" on the back nine with an 8-over par 44 for a total score of 81. Wayne had 6 pars on the front-nine but only 2 pars on the back-nine. Philly Metro Tour member Tony White was a distant 6-shots back at 87 in 2nd place.
Scott Wechsler, a Philly Metro Tour member playing in only his third GOLFWEEK AGT event this season, was the winner in the B Flight. Scott’s steady round of 42-43 for a total of 85 was good enough to best fellow Philly Metro member Jon DeMinico by 2 strokes. The difference came on the front-nine with DeMinico turning in 44 strokes, after which he matched cards with Wechsler throughout the rest of the round to finish at 87. Will Hurley from the Metro NY Tour and Steve Neder from the Philly Metro Tour were a further 4 strokes back at 91 in a tie for 3rd place.
The runaway winner in the C Flight was Stuart Leon of the Metro NY Tour, with a round of 91. Leon’s round of 44-45 for a total of 91 was 6 strokes better than 2nd place, which went to Dave Neder from the Philly Metro Tour.
There are only 3 scheduled events left this season, two of them at great private golf courses. You can see our complete schedule at www.amateurgolftour.net, and select Philly Metro from the drop-down menu.
