Manufacturers
Golf & Country Club hosted the GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour (Philly Metro &
Metro New York) on August 29th, 2016. This
great private club has a
classic Toomey-Flynn designed golf course from 1925 that winds
through rolling meadows near Ft. Washington, PA. Fast undulating greens, diabolical Par 3 holes
with confounding elevation changes, and the Sandy Run creek challenged the
field of 94 tour members on a beautiful sunny and breezy summer afternoon. Par
for the day was 72 (35-37), with the upper 18th green in play as a
Par 5 hole.
In the Championship
Flight, Albie Sanguiliano (77, 37-40) returned to the winner’s circle in
a very close contest over Alex Hargaden (78, 38-40). Chris Esbenshade (79,
40-39) was another stroke back. Hargaden made a great “eagle” 3 on the Par 5 9th
hole, his final stoke of the day! The CHAMP Flight played the BLACK Tees from 6,834
yards.
The
A Flight victory went to Carl
Handwerk (74, 35-39) by a single-stroke. Joe Arnold Sr. (75, 37-38), Tony White
(75, 36-39) and Brian Gallahue (75, 39-36) were all just a shot behind.
Gallahue took 2nd place on a match-of-cards and Arnold took 3rd.
Handwerk made a great “eagle” 3 on the Par 5 12th
hole. The
A Flight played the BLUE Tees from 6,567 yards.
In the B Flight, Keith Johnson (77,
37-40) broke through for his 1st victory of the season. Lou Parducci
(78, 37-41) was one-stroke behind in 2nd place. Rob Shim (Columbus
Tour) (81, 38-43) and Kevin Cockerham (81, 36-45) were tied; Shim took 3rd
place on a match-of-cards. The B Flight played the GOLD Tees from 6,300
yards.
The
C Flight winner was Tim Brennan
(85, 42-43). Tim claimed his 1st victory on the GOLFWEEK Amateur
Tour. Kurt Lewandowski (87, 41-46) and Robert Stillman (87, 44-43) were tied;
Stillman took 2nd place on a match-of-cards and Lewandowski took 3rd
place. The C Flight played the GOLD Tees from 6,300 yards.
In the D Flight, John Stevens (88, 42-46) claimed his 2nd victory of the season. George Wajda (90, 47-43)
took 2nd place. Jimmy Chwe (91, 47-44) was another stroke behind in
3rd place. The D Flight played the WHITE Tees from 6,136 yards.
Everyone
enjoyed the opportunity to play golf on such a well maintained and challenging golf
course. A special mention goes to Head Golf Professional Bob Fritz and his
staff for treating us as “members for the day” at their private club.
Our next tournament is Saturday September 10th at the beautiful
Galloway National Golf Club in Galloway, N.J. GOLFWEEK Magazine ranks this Tom
Fazio design in the Top 30 private courses in the country. The following
weekend, September 17th, is the 2016 Local Finals at Philmont
Country Club (North). This double-points tournament will determine the 2015
Flight Champions as well as the Philly Metro team for the upcoming Metro Cup
matches vs. Metro NY on Saturday October 1st.
