French
Creek Golf Club in Elverson, PA hosted the GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour (Philly Metro)
on Saturday August 19th, 2017. A Gil Hanse design, French Creek opened in 2003
in the heart of bucolic Chester County. Hanse designed French Creek with minimal
environmental disturbance allowing the site to remain rich in beauty and dramatic
terrain. Flowing brooks, woodlands and natural golf hazards offer a challenging
and relaxing round of golf for players of all skill levels. A Par 71, the
course requires numerous forced-carries over wetlands and other natural
hazards.
In the Championship
Flight, Owen Brown (77, 37-40) edged Alex Hargaden (78, 40-38) and Steve Barry
(78, 34-44) by one-stroke. Barry
scorched the front-nine with a birdie-EAGLE-birdie stretch on holes 2 through
4, but fell behind as Brown played a steadier back-nine to edge his fellow competitors.
CHAMP Flight played from the GOLD Tees at 6,522 yards.
The
A Flight victory went to new
member Swede Backhus (81, 37-44) by one-stroke over Carl Handwerk (82, 39-43). Josh Numbers (84, 41-43) was another
two-strokes back in 3rd place. The A Flight played a GOLD/BLUE Combo
Tee set at 6,382 yards.
In the B Flight, Richard Mariner (78,
39-39) ran away from the field with his best yet round “on tour” for a six-stroke
win over Jeff Carney (84, 43-41). Mariner’s
round includes five birdies! Tom Brennan
(86, 45-41) and Lou Parducci (86, 43-43) were another two-strokes back; Brennan
took 3rd place on a match-of-cards. The B Flight played BLUE Tees at
6,260 yards.
The
C Flight victory went to Ted
Mazurek (84, 42-42) by four-strokes over Joe Schulle (88, 43-45) and Zach Davis
(88, 42-46). Mazurek has won two consecutive events. Schulle took 2nd
place and Davis 3rd on a match-of-cards. C Flight played from a BLUE/WHITE Combo Tee set at 6,027 yards.
The
D Flight VICTORY went to Rob Kerr (95, 48-47) by one-stroke over Sean Matthews
(96, 44-52). Kerr has won two consecutive events. The D Flight also played the BLUE/WHITE Combo Tee set at 6,027 yards
French Creek Golf Club had been softened by
overnight rains and though wet in spots, the course was in fantastic condition
and scoring was impressive. There were 44 Birdies and 1 Eagle made by the
tournament participants. The weather was bright and sunny throughout the day. Thanks
to Head Golf Professional Justin Riegel and his staff for a tremendous day of
tournament golf.
The
tour moves on to Manufacturers Golf & Country Club in Ft. Washington, PA, for
a tournament on Monday August 28th, 2017. This challenging course
features rolling terrain and many great holes. This will be our fourth time
returning to this great private country club – hope to see you!
