Stockton Seaview
Resort in Galloway Twp., NJ hosted the GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour (Philly Metro) 2-Day
Tour Major on August 9th and 10th, 2014. Day One was
played on the Bay Course, a Donald Ross (and Hugh Wilson) design opened in 1914.
The course was recently renovated with several new tee
boxes added. The Bay Course is a links-style golf course with fescue hazards,
marsh reeds on the holes that play out to the Brigantine Bay, and challenging
greens complexes. It is home to the LPGA Shoprite Classic every summer. On Day
Two, we played the Pines Course, a
William Flynn and Howard Toomey design (with William Gordon) that dates from
1927. The course winds through a pine forest, with many sand bunkers and steep
greens surfaces providing a challenge for golfers of every ability level.
In the Championship
Flight, Gary Greenberg won for the first time this season against a field
of six ‘CHAMPS’ with a two-day total of 152 for a one-stroke victory over
Andrew Neal. On Day One, Neal carded a 76, to trail newcomer Aaron Rhaney by
one-stroke; Greenberg’s 78, which included four birdies, left him four-strokes
back. On Day Two, Greenberg surged ahead
with a round of 74 that again included four birdies, while Neal fired a 77,
just one-stroke too many to force a playoff. Rhaney fell back with an 82 on the
final day to place 3rd. Both CHAMP and A Flights played from “the tips” (BLUE tees) on both days on the
resort-style golf courses.
The A Flight victory went to Myron Gibert,
with a two-day total of 154. On Day One, Gibert posted a 4-over par 75 that
included three birdies in his last four holes! He was one-stroke ahead of
playing partner Justin O’Neal, who had a birdie-par-EAGLE finish for a 76. Rygo
Foss (Metro NY) was another two-strokes back with a 78. On Day Two, Gibert continued his fine play
with a 79, tied for low-round of the day. Foss,
who came home in 80, (with an EAGLE on 18) tied with O’Neal, who could do no better than 82; both players finished at 158. Foss took 2nd place on a match-of-cards over O'Neal. Phill Caccamise (Director, GWAT
Cincinnati Tour) took 4th place with steady rounds of 80 and 79.
In the B Flight, Joe Volpe continued
his season-long domination of the flight with a two-day total of 157 for a six-stroke
victory over Joe Foley. On Day One,
Volpe trailed Mike Sabbagh (78) by one-stroke with a fine round of 79 that included
two birdies. Foley and Steve Sanguiliano were another two-strokes back with 81’s.
On Day Two, Volpe returned a score of 78, while Sabbagh fell back to 4th
place after shooting an 86. Foley and Sanguiliano each carded an 82, with Foley
taking 2nd place on a match-of-cards. B, C and D Flights played on
both days from the WHITE tee markers.
The C Flight winner was Chris Moore, with
a two-day total 171, for a four-stroke victory over Dave Neder and Brian
Ganley. On Day One, Ganley shot his
best-ever round on tour of 81 to lead by five-strokes over Mike Marchionda and Moore.
Neder was another two-strokes back with
an 88. On Day Two, Marchionda fell back
to 4th place after carding a 91 on the tougher Pines course. Ganley
also struggled, coming home in 94 strokes. Neder took 2nd place over
Ganley on a match-of-cards with a steady round of 87.
The D Flight victory went to veteran George Adams, with a two-day total of 191,
for a one-stroke victory over S.W. Yeung (Metro NY). On Day One, Sean Matthews
and Yeung both led the way after carding 96’s. Adams was seven-strokes back at 103 after struggling on the fescue-laden Bay Course. On Day Two, Adams turned in a
great comeback round of 88, with a birdie on the final hole, to surge ahead and
nip Yueng by a single stroke. Yeung carded another 96 on Day Two, while
Matthews struggled and came home in 104.
The weather was
picture-perfect all weekend! Everyone enjoyed the opportunity to play golf on the
two great resort courses at the Stockton Seaview. A special thanks to the
Assistant Golf Professional Alex McGann for all of his help and assistance in
running the event. This was a ‘double-points’ Tour Major tournament. We proudly welcomed players from Metro NY, Chicago, Columbus, Cincinnati
and DC Metro tours to the tournament.
Our next tournament is at Old York Country Club, a private Gary Player designed
course located in horse-farm country near Chesterfield, NJ. The tournament is
scheduled for Saturday August 23rd, with a scheduled 12:00 PM 1st
tee start. The tournament entry fee is $140.00. This is a joint-event with the
Metro NY Tour.
