Forsgate Country Club, located in Monroe Twp., New Jersey, was the venue for the GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour tournament on Saturday August 3rd, 2013. Fifty-eight tour members from the PHILLY Metro & Metro NY tours, and two guests, competed on the Palmer Course at the club. Forsgate Country Club is a private 36-hole facility featuring two completely different golf courses. The Palmer Course opened in 1961, originally designed by Hal Purdy. The Arnold Palmer Group was hired to redesign the course in 1995; water hazards were added, fairways narrowed, and several new holes were built. The day started with light showers but ended sunny and breezy, challenging the golfers with the changing conditions. Soft greens provided an excellent scoring opportunity; 37 “birdies” and 1 “eagle” were recorded during the event on the Par 72 course.
In the Championship Flight, Michael Felton (MNY) bested the foursome with a fantastic round of 76 (34-42) from “the tips” that included 3” birdies” and an opening “eagle” 3 on the Par 5 1st hole. Michael Auerbach (MNY) was four strokes behind with a steady round of 80 (40-40). We proudly welcomed visiting member John Henry from the Orlando tour to the event.
The A Flight victory went to Kyle Mazza, who went round in 76 (39-37) to edge George Reby (77, 40-37) by one stroke. Kyle’s round included 3 birdies, including “back to back” birdies on the Par 5 12th and 13th holes. Great playing, Kyle! Donald Powell (78, 39-39) took 3rd place on a match of cards over Phillip Yang (78, 35-43); Yang’s round included 4 birdies, with 3 of them in his front-nine 35.
In the B Flight, Metro NY Director Tom Steinmann (43-44) was one of 5 players who went round in 87. Also tied with Tom at 87 were PHILLY Metro member Dave Taylor (46-41) and Metro NY members David O’Hanlon (44-43), Thomas Malfettone (42-45), and Rick Perrine (43-44). Steinmann prevailed in the playoff on the 3rd extra hole.
The C Flight champion was Dave Neder (PM), who went round in 85 (44-41) for a four stroke victory over Reggie Robinson (MNY) (47-42). Dave used some local knowledge to keep his ball in play and navigate the more difficult back-nine holes.
In the D Flight, Michael Dempsey (MNY) won a close battle over two other players. Michael’s round of 93 (45-48) bested John Stevens (PM) (94, 46-48) and S.W. Yeung (94, 47-47) by a single stroke.
The event raised $130.00 for the GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour’s charity partner, Stand Up 2 Cancer. Everyone commented on the great facilities at Forsgate Country Club. Special thanks to Carolyn McKenzie Andrews and her staff for welcoming us, and making us feel like “members for the day” at their club.
With only 3 events left in the season, The Philly Metro Tour moves on to one of the great courses in the area, the magnificent Manufacturer’s Golf & Country Club in Ft. Washington, PA. This William Flynn design, which dates to 1923, is sure to test our members with fast greens and difficult approach shots across the Sandy Run creek.
