Radley Run Country Club in the scenic countryside near West Chester, PA was the tournament venue for the GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour (Philly Metro) 2-Day Tour Major tournament on Saturday July 13th & Sunday July 14th, 2013. A field of forty-eight tour members competed on a hot and humid summer weekend, with a threat of severe weather (that thankfully never materialized). This bucolic private golf course was designed by Englishman Alfred Tull, and opened in 1964 on the site of the former Brandywine Hunt Club property. The course features sweeping vistas of the surrounding horse farm country, elevation changes, numerous water hazards, and several brilliant risk-reward holes. We welcomed visiting GWAT members Russel Cook (A), Keith Gibert (A), and Ken Mutzabaugh (D) from the DC Metro Tour to the weekend tournament.
In the Championship Flight, Rick Custer won with a two-day total of 163 (84 -79), to claim the title by 6 strokes over Dan Harris (91-78, 169). Dan’s round of 78 (42-36) on Sunday was tied for low round of the weekend, and included two back-nine birdies in his even-par 36. First day leader Andrew Neal (81-89, 170) was another stroke back. The CHAMP Flight played from 6,700 yards.
The A Flight winner was Albie Sanguiliano, also with a two-day total of 163 (85-78). Albie’s fine round of 78 on Sunday included two birdies. A close second was Donald Powell (83-81, 164). First day leader Michael Dupree (82-83, 164) was another stroke back, in third. The A Flight also played from the back tees at 6,700 yards.
In the B Flight, Phil Yang took the title with a total score of 162 (83-79). Phil’s great play earned him a promotion to A Flight for his next event. A distant second was Jay Barnica (89-84, 173), who was 11 strokes back. Another stroke back in third was a steady Jim Boyce (87-87, 174). B Flight played from 6,355 yards.
The C Flight champion was Vince Barbera (89-86, 175), in a one-hole playoff over Matthew McCormack (82-93, 175). Both Barbera and McCormack earned promotions to B Flight for their next event. Andrew Boegly (95-86, 181) was six strokes back in third place.
In the D Flight, George Adams took the title with a total score of 180 (94-86), nine shots better than John Stevens (94-95, 189). Both players were still tied going into the back-nine on Sunday.
The event raised $ 105.00 for the GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour’s charity partner, Stand Up 2 Cancer. Everyone enjoyed the opportunity to play golf on such a pristine and challenging private golf course. Special mention goes to the Head Golf Professional at Radley Run, John Kellogg, and his staff, who provided our group with exemplary service and made the entire experience a most enjoyable one.
Our next event on, Saturday July 27th, 2013 is at Running Deer Golf Club. Designed by Ed Karman in 2000, Running Deer opened as an upscale private golf course. Now operated by Ron Jaworski Golf, the course has a “low country” feel in a backwoods setting, and is in excellent condition. Scheduled tee times start at 12:30 PM from the 1st tee. The tournament entry fee is $110.00 and scheduled practice rounds are available.
