Philmont Country Club (North) hosted the GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour (Philly Metro) and several guests on Saturday September 8, 2012. Thirty-two tour players in four flights competed on a hot and windy afternoon under threatening skies on the beautifully conditioned course. Philmont is a private country club founded in 1906 in Huntington Valley, PA. The 6,670 yard Par 70 North Course, designed by William S. Flynn and Willie Park, features numerous water hazards, lightning fast greens, and tight tree-lined fairways. Unfortunately, severe weather interrupted the event about 4 ½ hours after tee-off and play was suspended with several flights unfinished.
In the Championship Flight, Andrew Neal carded a fine round of 79 (39-40) to take home the trophy. Wes Samons, from the Metro NY Tour, was five-shots back with a steady round of 84 (42-42). Joe Tague, from the Dallas TX Tour, was another three shots back with an 87 (45-42). The CHAMP Flight completed 18 holes.
The A Flight victory went to John DiValentino, Sr., his second tournament victory on the Philly Metro Tour, with a fine round of 82. After a front-nine 43, John managed the back-nine in 4-over par 39. Albie Sanguiliano was three-shots back with an 85 (45-40). The A Flight also completed 18 holes under the impending torrential rains.
In the B Flight, play was suspended after 14 holes when the heavy rains hit the golf course. Steve Winnick (70, 45-25) edged Keith Johnson (70, 44-26) on a match of cards based upon back-nine holes. Jim Boyce (73, 45-28) was another three shots back.
The C Flight champion was also determined after a suspended round with only 12 holes completed. Max Lamberto (58, 44-14) edged Dave Neder (59, 47-12) by a single stroke. John Stevens was another three-shots back at 62 (47-15). The C Flight caught the worst of the incoming heavy weather.
The event raised $85.00 for the GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour’s charity partner, Stand Up 2 Cancer. Special thanks to Head Golf Professional Mickey Sokalski and his staff at Philmont for treating our players as "members for the day" – it was a truly memorable golf experience. We proudly welcomed METRO NY tour members Wes Samons and Dennis Ives and DALLAS member Joe Tague.
The Philly Metro Tour season-ending championship event will be held Saturday September 22nd at Hidden Creek Golf Club in Egg Harbor Twp., NJ. This ten-year old private Crenshaw-Coore design is ranked in the Top 100 golf courses in the USA by GOLFWEEK Magazine. Scheduled tee times begin at 11:00 AM. Come on out and experience this incredible golf course.
