White Clay Creek Country Club at Delaware Park
Wilmington, Delaware
GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour (Philly Metro)
May 12, 2012
White Clay Creek Country Club at Delaware Park in Wilmington, DE was the venue for the second event of the season on Saturday May 12th, 2012. Players from both Philly Metro and DC Metro tours competed on the challenging Arthur Hills designed course that dates from 2005 for trophies in 5 flights. White Clay Creek is an extremely interesting and unusual layout that encircles the entire property, never returning to the clubhouse until the 18th hole. The creek and water hazards are in play on every hole, and it is truly "as advertised" – a shot maker’s delight! The sunny and pleasant weather made for a beautiful day of golf for the field of 46 players. Director of Golf Ryan Kidwell and his staff under the direction of R.G. Hackett III made certain that their golf course was in immaculate condition for our event.
Gary Greenberg took home the trophy in the Championship Flight. Gary shot a brilliant 2 over-par front-nine 38, but struggled on the back-nine to a 49 for a round of 87. Jerry Newell, who finished second, also shot 87 (45-42). In the playoff on the 1st hole of the 6,722 yard course, both players were short of the green in two. Greenberg chipped to a foot and tapped in for the victory when Newell missed his par putt. This was Gary’s first title on the GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour.
Experience on the golf course paid off for DC Metro member Tracy Hodge, who was the winner in the A Flight by seven strokes over Dennis Begley, who shot 86 (42-44). Tracy’s great round of 79 (39-40) included three birdies and nine pars on the extremely difficult 6,375 yard course. Tony White finished third on a match of cards, closing with birdies on the last two holes to post an 88. Tracy had played the golf course numerous times and that local knowledge and experience helped him to keep his ball in play throughout the day.
Scott Wechsler won the B Flight by one shot over veteran player Joe Foley (43-46). Scott’s round of 88 (46-42) included birdies on the 16th and 17th holes. The B Flight played from 6,375 yards. A further shot back was Dan Schwitters who carded a steady 90 (45-45).
The C Flight trophy went to Russell Kuyawa, a DC Metro member, with a round of 88 (44-44) on the 6,101 yard course. The C Flight was challenged by several difficult forced carries over wetlands and marsh. Gerald Newell (45-46) took second place on a match of cards over Kyle Mazza (45-46) at 91.
The D Flight champion was once again David Neder, with a round of 94 (47-47), by three strokes over Ken Wilson (45-52). Dave is a multiple winner on tour.
The Rail Bar & Grille in the clubhouse is a great place to relax after golf and enjoy the excellent cuisine and cold beverages. The event raised $110.00 for the GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour’s charity partner, Stand Up 2 Cancer
