The GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour (Philly Metro) was challenged by the course at Cavaliers Country Club in Newark, Delaware on Saturday July 30th, 2011. Twenty tour members in four flights competed on a hot and breezy (but not humid!) afternoon on the mature tree-lined golf course.Cavaliers Country Club opened in 1960 on what was once rolling farmland and forest. It features several water hazards, tight driving areas and fast contoured greens. The devilish back-nine plays several strokes harder than the front-nine.
In the Championship Flight, Gerald Newell bested a field of five ‘CHAMPS’ with a 2-stroke victory over Mike Mann and new member Ian Kessler. Greg’s round of 82 included a birdie on the Par 4 10th hole. His back nine score of 4-over par 40 was one of the lowest of the day on that difficult part of the golf course.
The A Flight victory went to Fred Banta, who has now won in consecutive events on the Philly Metro GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour. Fred staked himself to a 3-stroke lead after the easier front-nine, and then held on to best a fast closing Joe Foley, who was four shots better on the back than Fred. Fred shot a nice round of 83. Joe had a nice birdie on the difficult Par 4 18th hole to also play the back-nice in 40.
Tim Turner proved once again that he is a force to be reckoned with as he claimed a trophy in the B Flight. Tim’s steady play was evidenced by his final score 43-43 for an 86 to win by 9 shots over Jim Boyce.
The C Flight champion was Kyle Mazza, who won a scorecard playoff over Doug Johnson, after both players had carded a score of 90. Mazza’s round included two birdies. The winner was determined by a 1-stroke difference over the final 6 difficult holes .
The event raised $52 for the GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour’s charity partner, Stand Up 2 Cancer.
Our next event is at the prestigious Radnor Valley Country Club in Villanova, PA. Radnor Valley CC features lightning fast greens and lovely tree lined fairways, with water coming in to play on the back nine. The event has a scheduled 12:30 1st tee start and a $125.00 entry fee.
