Wildwood Golf
& Country Club in Cape May Courthouse, NJ hosted the GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour
(Philly Metro) on Saturday September 9th, 2017. Forty tour members made the journey “down the
shore” for a fantastic day of late-season golf on one of the area’s premier
private courses. Bright sunshine, clear
skies and pleasant temperatures with some gusty ocean breezes prevailed
throughout the day, as our group competed on the mature tree-lined golf course
that dates from 1916. The small fast
greens and numerous water hazards are only part of the challenge at Wildwood
Golf & Country Club’s course; only 3 Par 3 holes are in the layout which
makes the course play more difficult than others of a similar yardage.
In the Championship Flight, an
extremely close contest between Alex Hargaden (80, 37-43) and Steve Barry (81,
37-44) was settled on the 18th green, when Hargaden rolled in a long
putt to secure the one-shot victory. The Championship Flight played BLACK Tees
“from the tips” at 6,714 yards.
The A Flight victory went to George
Steinmetz (77, 36-41) by six-strokes over Kevin Cockerham (83, 42-41), who only
recently moved to A Flight. This was
George’s third victory of the season on our tour. Both Carl Handwerk (86, 43-43) and John
Freymuller (86, 40-46) were another three-strokes back; Handwerk took the 3rd
position on a match-of-cards. The A Flight also played BLACK Tees “from the
tips” at 6,714 yards.
The B Flight title went to veteran Lou
Parducci (85, 45-40) in a close contest over John DiValentino (86, 42-44). This was Parducci’s fourth title of the
season. New member Alex Kluka (87, 45-42 was another stroke-back in 3rd
position. The B Flight played BLUE Tees
from 6,387 yards.
The C Flight victory went to veteran Zach
Davis (93, 46-47) in a close contest. Dennis
Teeling (94, 48-46) and Lynne Bigelow (94, 47-47) were both one-stroke back;
Teeling took 2nd place and Bigelow 3rd place on a
match-of-cards. The C Flight played a BLUE / WHITE Combo tee set from 6,169
yards.
In the D Flight , Adam Hansen (88, 43-45) cruised to his second consecutive
victory by eight-strokes over John Stevens (96, 47-49). Hansen has shown some great form recently.
The D Flight also played a BLUE / WHITE Combo tee set from 6,169 yards.
Special thanks to Head Golf Professional Fred Reidel and
his staff for their outstanding assistance in ensuring our players were
“members for the day” at Wildwood Golf & Country Club. The course was in
fantastic condition for our tournament.
Our next tournament is the 2017 Local Finals at the private Little Mill Country
Club. This
double-points Tour Major tournament will determine the 2017 Flight Champions,
as well as the Philly Metro team for the upcoming Metro Cup matches vs. Metro
NY on Saturday September 30th, 2017.
