The
GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour (Philly Metro) was challenged by the difficult Burlington
Country Club on Saturday July 9th, 2016. Forty players in five flights competed
on an overcast afternoon on the Par 70 golf course. Burlington Country Club is nestled in a
relaxed setting, surrounded by horse farms, woodlands and farm land, free of
residential and commercial development. Originally designed by Alexander Findlay, and
opened in 1929, the course underwent a major renovation in 2002 when Ault &
Clark Associates rerouted the back-nine and built six new greens.
In the Championship Flight, Gary
Greenberg (82, 41-41) continued his recent run of victories with a one-stroke
win over new member Ken Pedraz (83, 41-42). The CHAMP Flight played the Black Tees
at 6,687 yards.
The A Flight victory went to Steve
Barry (79, 44-35) in a one-hole playoff over Darren Parkes (79, 42-37). In the
playoff, Barry chipped-in for birdie on the Par 4 1st hole. His
back-nine score of 35 in regulation was the best score of the day in relation
to par. The A Flight also played the Black Tees at
6,687 yards.
The B Flight title went to Steve
Mumford (79, 40-39) who won by two-strokes over Lou Parducci (81, 43-38) and
Andrew Wakefield (81, 43-38). This was Mumford’s second victory of the season.
Wakefield took 2nd place on a close match-of-cards. The B Flight
played the Blue Tees at 6,522 yards.
In
The C Flight, Metro NY Member Ray Fortino (86, 42-44) took the title by
four-strokes over Robert Stillman (90, 45-45), Zach Davis (90, 45-45) and Dave
Neder (90, 46-44). Neder took 2nd place on a match-of-cards. The C
Flight played White Tees at 6,101 yards.
The D Flight winner was Tour Director Jeff A. Brodsky (94, 43-51), who returned
to the winner’s circle for the first time this season. Brodsky won by
two-strokes over Sean Matthews (96, 46-50) and Ken Wilson (96, 45-51). Matthews
took 2nd place on a match-of-cards. The D Flight also played White
Tees at 6,101 yards.
The golf course was in excellent condition
for our tournament and presented a real challenge to the competitors. Special
thanks to Head Golf Professional Michael Mack and his staff for their
assistance during the tournament.
Our
next tournament is our second Two-Day Major of the season, being contested at
the private Radley Run Country Club in West Chester, PA on Saturday July 23 and
Sunday July 24, 2016. Radley Run underwent a major course renovation in the
off-season and is in spectacular condition for our event. Tee times start at
12:00 PM each day and the event fee is $260.00. Hope to see you there!
