Manufacturers Golf & Country Club hosted the GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour (Philly Metro) on August 31st, 2015. The golf course, a classic Toomey-Flynn design from 1925, winds through creeks and rolling meadows near Ft. Washington, PA. Fast greens and diabolical Par 3 holes with confounding elevation changes challenged the field of 60 members and 8 guests on a beautiful sunny and breezy summer afternoon. Par for the day was 72 (35-37), with the upper 18th green in play as a Par 5 hole.
In the Championship Flight, Gary Greenberg took the title over three other players with a round of 79 (39-40) that included 3 birdies. Jules Quinones (80, 40-40) was one-stroke back in 2nd place. Alex Hargaden had a Hole In One on the Par 3 8th hole with a Gap Wedge. The CHAMP Flight played from 6,771 yards.
The A Flight victory went to Justin O’Neal (79, 36-43) in a round that included 2 birdies. It was Justin’s first victory on the GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour. Michael Dupree (80, 38-42) and Scott Vanisko (Metro NY Tour) (80, 34-46) were one-stroke back; Dupree took 2nd place on a match-of-cards. The A Flight played from 6,567 yards.
In the B Flight, Carl Handwerk (79, 39-40) won his second consecutive tournament, by one-stroke over Keith Johnson (80, 35-45). Handwerk’s round included an “Eagle” 3 on the Par 5 9th hole. Ed Gilbert (81, 40-41) was another stroke back in 3rd place. Ron Pace (on the Par 5 9th) and Steve Winnick (on the Par 5 15th) also recorded “Eagle” 3’s in the tournament.
The C Flight winner was determined in a playoff between Mike Galletta (86, 45-41) and Dave Neder (86, 39-47). Galletta’s bogey on the Par 4 1st hole was enough to secure his first victory on the GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour. Richard Paskman (92, 44-48) was six-strokes back in 3rd place.
In the D Flight, Metro NY member Kevin Brennan (91, 40-51) took the title by five-strokes over Metro NY member Jeff Marshall (96, 46-50). John Stevens (97, 46-51) was another stroke behind in 3rd place. B, C and D Flights all played from 6,363 yards.
Everyone enjoyed the opportunity to play golf on such a well maintained and challenging golf course. Special mention to Head Golf Professional Bob Fritz and his staff, for treating us as “members for the day” at their private club. Our next tournament, the 2015 Local Finals, is being held at Forsgate Country Club (Palmer Course) on Saturday September 19th with tee times starting at 11:00 AM. This double-points tournament will determine the 2015 Flight Champions as well as the Philly Metro team for the upcoming Metro Cup matches vs. Metro NY on October 3rd.
It has been another fantastic season on the GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour and we are already looking forward to welcoming everyone back for our 6th season of local tournament golf in 2016.
