Radley
Run Country Club was the tournament venue for the GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour (Philly
Metro) tournament on Saturday July 26th, 2014. A field of forty-four tour members
and guests competed on a pleasant summer afternoon. Radley Run, located in the bucolic Westtown section near West Chester, PA, was designed area by
Englishman Alfred Tull, and opened in 1964 on the site of the former Brandywine
Hunt Club property. Located inside a planned community, the course features
sweeping vistas of the surrounding horse farm country, elevation changes,
numerous water hazards, and several brilliant risk-reward holes. The course
plays “long” and is a great test of golf!
In the Championship
Flight, Albie Sanguiliano (81, 39-42) survived a three-way
playoff as three CHAMP members returned scores of 81 from “the tips”. Joining
Albie in the playoff were Gary Greenberg (81, 40-41) and Doug Hilgenberg (81,
41-40). In the playoff, Sanguiliano and Hilgenberg both made a Par 4 on the 1st
hole; Greenberg was eliminated after a “bogey”. Sanguiliano secured the victory
on the Par 5 2nd hole with a conceded Par after Hilgenberg hit several
balls OB.
The
A Flight winner was Mark
Monkhouse (80, 39-41), who returned the lowest score of the day from “the tips”.
This was Mark’s second victory of the season. New member Steve Sigmon (86, 46-40)
was six-strokes behind in 2nd place. Kyle Mazza (87, 44-43) was
another stroke back and won 3rd place on a match of cards over Jack
Aitoro (87, 39-48).
In
the B Flight, Steve Sanguiliano
(85, 43-42) celebrated his first victory on tour, with a one-stroke victory
over Ed Kelly (86, 42-44). Ron Fortino (87, 42-46) was another stroke back in 3rd
place. Our hearty congratulations to the Sanguiliano brothers for earning
victories at the same event!
The
C Flight champion was Tom
Evancho (91, 43-48), who secured his first victory of the season in a playoff over Jon Son (91, 45-46). Both players struggled on the difficult
Par 4 18th hole. In the playoff, Evancho claimed the victory on the
Par 5 2nd hole with a double-bogey 7as darkness fell.
In
the D Flight, Leroy Mines (99, 45-54) was another first-time winner on tour,
securing a two-stroke victory over John Stevens (101, 49-52) and Luis Feliciano
(101, 49-52).
The
tournament raised $60.00 for the GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour’s charity partner, Stand
Up 2 cancer. Everyone enjoyed the opportunity to play on such a challenging
private golf course. A special mention to John Kellogg, Head Golf Professional at Radley Run, and his
staff, who provided our tour with exemplary service and made the entire
experience a most enjoyable one. We proudly welcomed Jason Tanner from the
Salt Lake City tour and Steve Stewart from the DC Metro tour to the tournament.
Our
next tournament is a 2-Day Tour Major, being contested this year at the
Stockton Seaview Resort in Galloway, NJ. Saturday August 9th we play
the Bay Course (Donald Ross) with tee time starting at 12:30 PM and Sunday
August 10th we play the Pines Course (Hugh Wilson and Toomey/Flynn)
with tee times starting at 9:00 AM. The GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour will be hosting
members and family in our Hospitality Suite in the Stockton Seaview Resort
during the tournament weekend.
