The
Club At Morgan Hill in Easton, PA hosted the GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour (Philly
Metro) on Saturday May 24th, 2014. Fifty-two tour players in five flights
competed on a sunny and breezy afternoon on the challenging golf course. The Club At Morgan Hill, which dates from 2004,
was designed by Kelly Blake Moran. An extreme test of golf, there is hardly a
level lie to be found at Morgan Hill. Well bunkered fairways and green
complexes combined with fast undulating greens wreaked havoc on most of the
field; birdies were few and far between. No two holes are the same at Morgan
Hill but every hole presents unique challenges.
In the CHAMP Flight, GWAT Tidweater
(Virginia) member Ryan Nolan bested a foursome with an 81 (39-42) from “the
tips”. Philly Metro member Andrew Neal was 2-strokes behind at 83 (42-41).
The
A Flight victory went to Mark Monkhouse,
who posted a fine round of 78 (40-38) to beat the field by a six-stroke margin.
This was Mark’s first win on tour. Mark’s round included 2 birdies, including
the difficult Par 4 17th hole. New member Michael Peters was in 2nd
place with and 84 (42-42); Kyle Mazza also shot an 84 (41-43) and took 3rd place on a match of
cards.
In the B Flight, Joe Volpe won his
first event on tour (83, 41-42) with a four-stroke victory over veteran Jay
Barnica (87, 48-39). Joe’s round included a fine birdie on the Par 4 16th
hole. Barnica “found his game” on the back-nine to secure 2nd place.
Kevin Martyn, who chipped in for birdie on the difficult downhill Par 3 7th
hole, held on to take 3rd place with a round of 88 (41-47)
The C Flight champion was
John Daly, who went around in 93 (46-47). Daly won by one-stroke over the
defending C Flight Champion Dave Neder (94, 42-52). Neder ran into some difficult
lies on his back-nine that led to back-to-back “triple bogeys” which derailed
his title hopes.
In
the D Flight, George Adams (104, 48-56) won
the head-to-head battle against fellow D Flight competitor Bruce Vander Voort (108,
51-57). This was George’s second consecutive victory.
The event raised $60.00 for the GOLFWEEK
Amateur Tour’s charity partner, Stand Up 2 Cancer. Special
thanks to Head Golf Professional Patrick Murphy and his staff at The Club At
Morgan Hill for their help with the golf tournament. We found course conditions
to overall be very good.
The tour moves on to Shawnee Country Club at Shawnee Resort, along the
Pennsylvania-New Jersey border in Shawnee On Delaware, PA. The tournament date
is June 14, 2014.
