Deerfield Golf & Country Club
Newark, Delaware
May 10, 2014
Deerfield Golf & Country Club in Newark, DE was the replacement venue for the second tournament of the 2014 season on Saturday May 10th, filling in for White Clay Creek after that course was damaged by recent heavy rains. 60 members from the Philly Metro and DC Metro Tours competed on the challenging Par 70 course for trophies in 5 flights. Deerfield G&CC, set inside the lovely White Clay Creek State Forest, challenges players with rolling terrain, many strategically placed bunkers, and sloped undulating greens. The humid overcast weather gave way to a brief thunderstorm, which interrupted play for 30 minutes; after the storm, skies cleared and the entire field completed play.
Andrew Neal took home the trophy in the Championship Flight. Andrew shot a round of 76 (37-39) that included two great birdies on the Par 5 10th and the Par 4 12th, for a three- stroke victory over last year’s winner Gary Greenberg (37-42,79).
The A Flight winner was George Reby (41-38, 79), who made Par on the first extra hole, the Par 5 1st, to win in a playoff over Robert Kulbacki (39-40, 79). George made 3 birdies during his regulation round. Kulbacki made a great birdie 3 on the Par 4 18th hole to get into the playoff with Reby. Two-shots back in 3rd place was last week’s winner Kyle Mazza (44-37, 81). Mazza’s back-nine score of 37 was the low score in the field on those holes.
The B Flight also went to a playoff to determine this week’s Flight Champion. New member Gary Green (40-41, 81) battled Deerfield local and last season’s B Flight Champion Jim Boyce (39-42, 81) over 4 extra-holes before winning with a Par on the difficult Par 4 4th hole. Green had a great birdie 3 on the 4th hole during regulation play. Boyce had 2 birdies during his regulation round. Ed Gilbert (42-40, 82) missed the playoff by one-stroke and took 3rd place.
The C Flight trophy went to veteran Sal Tomczak (41-44, 85), who scored two-strokes better than new member Thomas Evancho (48-39, 87). Evancho played a fantastic back-nine after the rain delay.
The D Flight Champion for the 2nd straight year was George Adams, with a 3-stroke victory over John Stevens (50-49, 99). George won with a consistent round of 96 (47-49).
The Deerfield Pub & Grille in the clubhouse is a great place to relax after golf and enjoy the excellent cuisine and cold beverages. Thanks to Director Of Golf Chris Boos and his staff for scrambling to make room for us after the washout at White Clay Creek caused a change of venue for this tournament. The event raised $60.00 for the GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour’s charity partner, Stand Up 2 Cancer.
