Woodcrest Country Club in Cherry Hill, NJ hosted the GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour (Philly Metro) Local Finals on Saturday September 21, 2013. Forty tour players in five flights competed on a sunny and breezy afternoon on a very challenging and difficult golf course. Woodcrest, designed by Howard Toomey and William S. Flynn, opened for play in 1932. The 6,528 yard Par 71 course features narrow fairways, numerous water hazards, and small, sloped greens. Five Flight Championships were “up for grabs” as a result of the day’s golf. Everyone was excited to accept the challenge of such a wonderful, old-style golf course to determine the season-long points races.
In the Championship Flight, Gary Greenberg carded a round of 93 (47-46) to take home the trophy, and win the overall season title. Gary has been hampered by a knee injury that is keeping him from playing at his best. This was Gary’s third consecutive title on tour.
The A Flight victory went to Doug Hilgenberg, his third of the season, with a fantastic round of 79 (37-42). Doug scorched the front-nine in two-over par 37, including 2 great birdies. He managed another birdie on the difficult Par 3 17th hole which allowed him to break 80 for the day. Doug took the overall season title with this victory. Dave Upchurch (86, 41-45) edged out Donald Powell (86, 38-48) on a match-of-cards for 2nd place.
In the B Flight, Keith Johnson took the title with a fine round of 86 (42-44), for a one-stroke victory over two other players. Steve Mumford (87, 45-42) edged Dave Taylor (44-43) on a match-of-cards for 2nd place. The next closest players were another 7 strokes back.
The C Flight champion was Mike Marchionda, with a nice round of 94 (42-52). Mark Butterfoss (99, 51-48) was in 2nd place. Most of the C Flight did not break “100” on this very difficult golf course.
In the D Flight, John Stevens took the title and the season-long points race with a 103 (51-52). George Adams (105, 51-54) was in 2nd place.
The event raised $90.00 for the GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour’s charity partner, Stand Up 2 Cancer.Special thanks to Director Of Golf Bill Torlucci and his staff at Woodcrest for their help with the event.
