Philmont Country Club (North) hosted the GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour (Philly Metro) for the 3rd consecutive season on Saturday June 29th, 2013. Fifty-two tour players in five flights competed on a sunny and warm afternoon on the beautifully conditioned golf course. Philmont is a private country club founded in 1906 in Huntington Valley, PA. The 6,670 yard Par 70 North Course, designed by William S. Flynn and Willie Park, features numerous water hazards, lightning fast greens, and tight tree-lined fairways. The North Course at Philmont Country Club has hosted many prestigious events over the years, including the Nike Tour (now the Web.Com Tour) in the mid-90's, as well as USGA local qualifiers for the U.S. Open and the U.S. Amateur.
In the Championship Flight, visiting Metro NY member Michael Felton carded a fine round of 82 (40-42) from the back tees to take home the trophy. Michael birdied the Par 4 1st hole and the Par 3 8th hole during his round. Jimmy Taylor, playing his first event of the season, was five-shots back with a steady round of 87 (44-43).
The A Flight victory went to Donald Powell, his first tournament victory on the Philly Metro Tour. Donald shot a great round of 79 (40-39) that included a birdie on the Par 3 11th hole. Donald was the only player to break 80 from the back-tees on the difficult golf course. Dave Upchurch (80, 40-40) and George Reby (39-41) tied for 2nd place; Upchurch took second on a match of cards.
In the B Flight, Robert Kulbacki shot a fantastic round of 77 (37-40) which included a birdie on the Par 4 4th hole, to win by 4 strokes over Jon DeMinico (81, 42-39). This was Robert’s second title on tour. Steve Winnick was another 2 strokes back at 83 (38-45). Sam Siepiela (84, 45-39) took fourth place on a match of cards over Kevin Martyn (84, 41-43).
The C Flight champion was Dave Neder, who took his first title of the season. Dave’s round of 82 (39-43) was his low round on tour – way to go, Dave! Matthew McCormack was 3 strokes back with an 85 (42-43).
In the D Flight, Chris Laughlin earned a “battlefield promotion” to the C Flight with his third straight title. Chris shot a fantastic round of 81(40-41) that included consecutive birdies on the Par 5 12th hole and the Par 4 13th holes. Welcome to C Flight, Chris!
The event raised $120.00 for the GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour’s charity partner, Stand Up 2 Cancer. Special thanks to Head Golf Professional Mickey Sokalski and his staff at Philmont for treating our players as “members for the day” – it was a truly memorable golf experience.
The Philly Metro Tour’s 2-Day Tour Major will be held Saturday July 13th & Sunday July 14th at Radley Run Country Club in West Chester, PA. ). This fabulous private golf course was designed by Englishman Alfred Tull, and opened in 1964 on the site of the former Brandywine Hunt Club property. The course features sweeping vistas of the surrounding horse farm country, elevation changes, numerous water hazards, and several brilliant risk-reward holes. Scheduled tee times begin at 12:30 PM both days.
