Deerfield Golf & Country Club in Newark, DE was the venue for the second event of the season on Saturday May 11th, 2013. 50 members and 2 guests from the Philly Metro tour competed on the challenging Par 70 course for trophies in 5 flights. Deerfield G&CC, set inside the lovely White Clay Creek State Forest, challenges players with rolling terrain, many strategically placed bunkers, and sloped undulating greens. The humid overcast weather made for a pleasant day of golf for the most of the field, although several groups did get caught in a downpour at the end of the day.
Director of Golf Chris Boos and his staff under the direction of Kurt Zolbe made certain that their golf course was in immaculate condition for our event, and that everything went smoothly for us. Everyone commented on how nice the golf course looked and the excellent course conditions.
Gary Greenberg took home the trophy in the Championship Flight. Gary shot a round of 79 (41-38) that included two great birdies on the Par 4 3rd and the Par 3 11th, for a one stroke victory over Rick Custer (42-38). Rick’s round included a birdie on the Par 3 2nd hole.
The A Flight winner was Doug Hilgenberg, who cruised to a 5-stroke victory over two veteran players. Doug’s great round of 78 (38-40) included two birdies and eight pars, and was the lowest round of the day at Deerfield. Doug birdied the Par 5 10th and the Par 4 15th holes en-route to victory. Dave Upchurch (83, 44-39) nipped Bob Hobson (83, 42-41) on a match-of-cards for 2nd place.
New member George Reby won the B Flight by one shot in a head-to-head battle over veteran player Keith Johnson (84, 40-44). George’s round of 83 (44-39) included a birdie on the Par 4 12th hole. David Taylor was another shot back at 85 (46-39).
The C Flight trophy went to Matthew McCormack, a Deerfield member, for his first title on tour. Matthew won with a round of 85 (45-40) for a 6-stroke victory over 2 players. Doug Johnson (91, 49-42) edged Bobby Dando (91, 44-47) on a match-of-cards for 2nd place.
The D Flight champion was new member George Adams, with a 2-stroke victory over Ken Wilson (100, 53-47). George won with a consistent round of 98 (49-49).
The Deerfield Pub & Grille in the clubhouse is a great place to relax after golf and enjoy the excellent cuisine and cold beverages. The event raised $60.00 for the GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour’s charity partner, Stand Up 2 Cancer.
