Little Mill Country Club's Tight Fairways & Small Greens Challenge GWAT 08/26/12
Little Mill Country Club, located in the pinelands near Marlton, New Jersey, was the venue for the GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour (Philly Metro) tournament on Sunday August 26th, 2011. Thirty-two tour members and four guests competed on a sunny and breezy afternoon on an immaculately conditioned course. Little Mill Country Club is a private 27-hole golf and country club designed by Garrett J. Renn and opened in 1967. This well-manicured course features tight driving areas, thick rough, and small greens. Water comes into play on several holes of the BLUE Course. BLUE also features the 'highest point' in S. Jersey - the hilltop Par 3 8th hole that plays downhill, with a pond that guards the right side of the green. Birdies were few and far between as players struggled to keep the ball in the fairway and maintain momentum when hitting from the thick rough.
In the Championship Flight, Gary Greenberg bested a field of four ‘CHAMPS’ by 6 strokes. After a 7-over par front nine, Gary shot a 3-over par back nine for an 82 (43-39) total. Andrew Neal (88, 46-42) was the runner-up. Both players are battling for the CHAMP Flight season title.
The A Flight victory went to Dave DiValentino who shot the lowest round of the day from the BLUE tees. Dave was even-par on the front nine, and came home in 5-over for a total score of 77 (36-41), and an 8-stroke victory over Albie Sanguiliano (85, 42-43). Each player had one birdie in their round.
In the B Flight, Kyle Mazza took a big step towards winning the season-long points race with a 1-stroke victory over Jon DeMinico (88, 40-48). Mazza went round in 87 (45-42); the difference was how both players handled the BLUE course, our back-nine. Kevin Cockerham (89, 43-46) was another stroke back.
The C Flight champion was Chris Moore, who claimed his first GOLFWEEK AGT title with a round of 94 (48-46) for a 2-stroke victory over 3 other players. Metro NY member Reggie Robinson (96, 48-48), Dave Neder (51-45), and Asst. Director Leo Cassidy (96, 46-50) were all tied for 2nd place. The C Flight played from the WHITE tees.
In the D Flight, David Cooey wrapped up the season-long points race with another victory. David’s round of 96 (50-46) from the GOLD tees included two birdies on Par 5 holes. Metro NY member Dennis Ives was five-strokes back with a round of 101 (47-54).
The event raised $85.00 for the GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour’s charity partner, Stand Up 2 Cancer.Everyone commented on the well-conditioned golf course. We proudly welcomed GOLFWEEK AGT Metro NY members Reggie Robinson, Rob Kiesel and Dennis Ives to the event. It was truly a "private club for a day" experience.
With only 2 events left in the season, The Philly Metro Tour moves on to the private Philmont Country Club on Saturday September 8th, 2012; tee times begin at 12:00 noon. Following that we play our Tour Championship at the fabulous Hidden Creek Golf Club on Saturday September 22nd, 2012 in Egg Harbor Twp., NJ – this is a ‘double-points’ event.
