Metedeconk National Golf Club Jackson, NJ
Philly Metro & Metro NY Inaugural Event
April 30, 2011
Metedeconk National Golf Club in Jackson, NJ was the venue for the inaugural event of two new GOLFWEEK Amateur Tours on Saturday April 30, 2011. Players from both Metro NY and Philly Metro competed on the Founders Course at the immaculate Robert Trent Jones design for trophies in 5 flights. The course played extremely difficult, with the combination of fast greens and deep secondary rough proving to be a tremendous challenge for the sold-out field of 66 players. The event raised $190.00 for the GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour's charity partner Stand Up 2 Cancer.
Mark Macejko of Vass, NC (who plays on the Triad NC GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour) took home the trophy in the Championship Flight. Mark was the only player in the field to break 80. His steady round of 79 included 11 pars, 6 bogeys, a double-bogey and a birdie on the Par 5 5th hole. Jim Grosso of the Philly Metro tour placed 2nd three strokes behind with an 82.
Joe Arnold, Jr., who plays on the Metro NY tour, was the winner in the A Flight. Joe’s round of 80 included a birdie on the Par 5 5th hole, and another one on the difficult 18th hole. He played steady golf, missing out on overall low score by just one stroke. Michael Wach of the Metro NY tour finished 2nd with a round of 84. Victor Lugo of the Metro NY tour placed third one stroke behind with an 85.
The B Flight tournament was a heated competition decided by one stroke. Rick LoPiccolo of the Metro NY tour took home the trophy in the B flight with a round of 88, which included a chip-in birdie on the 1st hole, his 11th of the day. Derek Stevenson, also from the Metro NY tour was one shot back with an 89 that included an amazing birdie on the #1 handicap Par 5 third, which plays over water to an extremely difficult green. A further shot back was Tony White of the Philly Metro tour with a round of 90.
The runaway winner in the C Flight was Jim Boyce of the Philly Metro tour, with a round of 89. Robert Kiesel of the Metro NY tour was 11 strokes higher, taking 2nd place with a round of 100.
The D Flight champion was Doug Johnson, from the Philly Metro tour, with a round of 91 that included a birdie on the Par 5 10th hole. Jeff West, also from the Philly Metro tour was four strokes back with a round of 95.
The Philly Metro & Metro NY tours are co-hosting another event later this summer at the incredible Galloway National Golf Club in Galloway, NJ. Please mark your calendars and plan to join us on Saturday August 20th for this event in southern NJ, near Atlantic City.
