Blacksburg Regional Recap

Pete Dye River Course at Virginia Tech | July 18-19, 2026

The 2026 Blacksburg Regional once again lived up to its reputation as one of the Golfweek Amateur Tour's premier events. The Pete Dye River Course at Virginia Tech challenged every competitor with dramatic elevation changes, demanding tee shots, and some of the most difficult greens players will face all season. Over two days, golfers from across the country battled for Regional Championships, with consistency, patience, and mental toughness proving to be the difference.

Both Nicole and I thank you all very much for playing in the 2nd Annual Blacksburg Regional, and for sharing some great memories with us.

Championship Flight

David Wachter (Indianapolis, IN) captured the Championship Flight title with rounds of 75-74—149 (+5). Wachter never allowed the pressure to affect his game, following an opening-round 75 with another steady 74 to finish three strokes clear of the field.

The biggest charge on Sunday came from Mike Hartselle (Tidewater, VA), whose outstanding 72 was one of the best rounds of the tournament. Hartselle climbed into a tie for second with Robert Arnold (Charlotte, NC) at 152 (+8) after Arnold also closed with a strong 74.

Scott Kittleson (Charlotte, NC) and Mike Little (Tidewater, VA) shared fourth at 155 (+11), while David Dodgen, Zane Sanford, and Terrance Bordley rounded out the top finishers.

A Flight

The A Flight belonged to Alton Smith (Tidewater, VA), who produced one of the finest closing rounds of the weekend. After opening with a 79, Smith fired a brilliant 74 on Sunday to finish at 153 (+9) and earn a convincing four-shot victory.

Tied for second at 157 (+13) were fellow Tidewater players Ryan Staples and Kevin Martin, both posting matching rounds of 80-77.

Thomas Dobrick (Tidewater, VA) and Dwayne Divers (South Florida) tied for fourth at 158 (+14), while Tyler Tuel, Tim Middleton, and JD Somerset finished tied for sixth.

One of Sunday's best comeback performances came from Matthew Taylor (Richmond), who rebounded from an opening 86 with a superb 76 to climb into the Top 10.

B Flight

The B Flight featured one of the closest finishes of the weekend.

Timothy VanSickle (Richmond) claimed the Regional Championship with rounds of 81-85—166 (+22), finishing just one stroke ahead of the competition.

Tied for second at 167 (+23) were David Hotze (Tidewater, VA), whose consistent 83-84 earned a runner-up finish, and Kevin Bryars (Tidewater, VA), who held the first-round lead after an opening 77 before battling through a difficult final round.

Pat Crawford (Tidewater, VA) and Trey Richardson (Richmond) tied for fourth, while Dale Chu, Steven Zannos, and Swami Patel rounded out the top finishers.

C Flight

The C Flight championship went to John Frye (Tidewater, VA), who built an early lead with an opening-round 82 before finishing at 170 (+26) to secure the Regional Championship.

Forest Maitland (Richmond) claimed second with consistent rounds of 86-87, while Mike Hale (Tidewater, VA) produced one of the biggest Sunday improvements, firing an 85 after opening with a 93 to finish third.

Perhaps the most impressive comeback belonged to Bobby Hargett (Tidewater, VA). After an opening-round 100, Hargett bounced back with an outstanding 82—the lowest final-round score in the flight—to climb all the way to fourth place.

Kevin Brown and Brian McLin rounded out the top six, while several players made significant improvements on Sunday despite the demanding conditions.

D Flight

The D Flight championship was earned by Casey Swiderski (Washington, DC Metro), who posted steady rounds of 90-91—181 (+37) to capture the title by three shots.

Keith Miller (Tidewater, VA) made one of the tournament's strongest Sunday charges, improving from a 97 to an impressive 87 to finish second at 184 (+40).

Micheal Didion (Cincinnati/Dayton) closed with an 89 to finish third, followed by Jimmie Williams (Richmond) in fourth and Will Edwards (Tidewater, VA) in fifth.

The flight also featured several consistent performances, including Jeremiah Niesen, who carded identical rounds of 96-96.

Tournament Highlights

The Pete Dye River Course once again proved why it is one of the Golfweek Amateur Tour's premier championship venues. Players from across the country faced a true test of golf, where every fairway hit, every approach shot, and every putt mattered.

The weekend showcased outstanding performances across every flight, highlighted by:

• David Wachter's Championship Flight victory at 149 (+5).
• Alton Smith's closing 74 to dominate the A Flight.
• Timothy VanSickle surviving one of the closest finishes of the weekend in B Flight.
• John Frye capturing the C Flight title with steady two-day golf.
• Casey Swiderski earning the D Flight Championship through consistency on one of the tour's toughest courses.

Congratulations to all of the flight champions, top finishers, and every competitor who took on the challenge of the 2026 Blacksburg Regional. The event once again delivered exceptional competition, sportsmanship, and memorable moments, making it another outstanding stop on the Golfweek Amateur Tour schedule.
