2024 Western Players Championship - Recap

 

John Wells, Lucas Boozer, Rhett Drummond, Jordan Cook, and Ben Bearden all won the 2024 Western Players Championship Regional!

The 2024 Western Players Championship Regional brought members from 34 of our Local Tours across the country to Scottsdale, AZ. The TPC Scottsdale, The Stadium and The Championship Courses hosted 182 Golfweek Amateur Tour members.

Championship Flight-   The Championship Flight was a heavyweight battle throughout the weekend. 5 Players would finish the event within 3 shots of the winner. Day One leader John Wells (Arizona) would head to the final 9 holes, up by 1 shot. He would extend the lead to 3 before Bryce Benson (Dallas- Ft. Worth, TX) made birdie on 15 to close the gap to a single shot. Both would bogey the famous Par 3, 16th, and Par 17 and 18 to give Wells the one-shot win at 138 total for the weekend. Benson would finish solo second at 139. 2023 winner Corbin Holt (Alabama) would finish in tie for third with Laurie Warder (Arizona) and Wallace Nelson (Arizona) at 141.

A Flight-   Alabama was represented well at TPC Scottsdale, winning 3 of the 5 Flights on the weekend. Lucas Boozer (Alabama) earned their first flight championship of the weekend with a 5-shot victory in claiming the A Flight. Trailing by 2 on the final day, Boozer matched the low A-Flight round of the weekend, shooting 74 to pull away late. Mike Gooch (Arkansas) finished solo second. Colton Horton (Dallas- Ft. Worth, TX) took solo third. Day One leader, Joe Kenyon (Arizona) finished in a tie for fourth with Jeremy Schneider (Chicago, IL).

B Flight-   It was a three-man race heading into Day Two at TPC Scottsdale. After posting 77 on Day One, Rhett Drummond (North Central Florida), Matt Jensen (Kansas), and Mike Perez (North Central Florida) all headed to Day Two ready to battle. Perez would take the lead to the back 9 after shooting 40. Drummond and Jensen trailed by two after posting 42.

Drummond would put up 39 on the back 9 to finish at 81 on the day and win by 2. Jensen and Perez would both post 83 on the day to finish T2. Jonathan Kelly (Arizona) finished solo forth, with Kenny Cobb (Cincinnati/Dayton), Mike Zimmerman (Arizona), and Adrian Klos (Dallas- Ft. Worth, TX) all finishing in a tie for fifth place. 

C Flight-   Jordan Cook (Alabama) earned the second Flight Championship for Alabama, holding off a charge on Day Two to earn a one-shot victory. After a stellar 78 on Day 1, Cook would have to hold on, as Orlando Almeida (El Paso, TX/ Las Cruces, NM) made a run-on Day Two. Starting the day 5 shots back, Almeida posted 81 to close the gap to one. Cook would come up clutch, making par on his final hole of the day, the famous, Par 3, 16th, to keep his one-shot lead and lock up the Championship. Almeida finished one back with a Two-Day total of 164. Collin Wilson (Alabama) finished third with Mike Martin (Arizona) rounding out the top 4.

D Flight-   Ben Bearden (Alabama) took the final of 3 wins for the Alabama Tour. After posting 87 on Day 1, Bearden posted the lowest round for the D Flight on Day 2 to lock up the win. Up by 2 to start the day, Bearden would pull away after posting 82 at the Champions Course at TPC. Robert Aamodt (Denver, CO) and Jermaine Luke (Atlanta, GA) made runs on Day 2 with both posting 85 in the final round to finish second and third, respectively. The win was Bearden’s second of the 2024 Season!
