Flagg, Wellard Shine as Seniors Lead Way at Stoneybrook West

David Wellard Tees Off at Stoneybrook West
Stoneybrook West kept up its reputation for producing some outstanding performances on the Edwin Watts Amateur Tour. This year it was the seniors who stole the spotlight. Jim Flagg carded a fine round of even par 72 and edged past Joe Ondo by a single shot in the Senior Championship flight. David Wellard (pictured) raced away from the Senior A field by shooting a terrific round of 74 which included an eagle and a 1-under 35 on the back nine. John Rex was well back with an 80 and Chuck Cannon scored 81 for third. Senior B also had its share of action as Greg Takacs and Ben Hamby needed extra holes to decide first place after each player carded 83. It only took one hole as Greg prevailed. Greg described the playoff this way, "It seemed like neither of us wanted to win. I just made one less mistake than Ben.". In the regular flights, Chad Frank and John Ward needed a playoff to decide the Championship flight. Each shot 77. Chad made a 40 foot birdie putt on the first extra hole to win. It could have been a huge playoff as three more players were right behind at 78, Chris Geruschat, Jim Hammons, and Bill Shufelt. A flight produced some good scoring on this day as well. John Creighton came out on top with a 75. Dennis Cargo was a close second at 76. Scott Sharp and Chad Pontiff also broke 80 as they posted 78's. In B flight, Anthony Gutierrez's 80 was one better than Dan Rabaja. Dan was playing in the group right in front of Anthony. Dan and Anthony carpool to the tournaments together so I bet it was an interesting ride home Saturday afternoon! Four players were tied for third on 83; Andy Baker, Greg Takacs, Julio Negron, Jr. and Ben Hamby. It seems like someone different has the hot hand in C flight every week. This week it was John Byrd's turn. He made his way around in 83 and was two better than Jason Ley at 85. Troy Barnes was third with 87 in his first event of the year. D flight also continues with great competition each time out. Ray Barganier shot a 91 to take top honors. Bob Miller was next with 94. Chris Benedetti took the scorecard playoff for the third place prize. Chas McIntyre and Alfonso McDonald also had 96. Next up is the first two-day event of the year. We are on the road to PGA Club in Port St. Lucie on May 17-18.
