DISNEY A TOUGH TEST

The Magnolia is no Mickey Mouse course
Disney World is often called "The Happiest Place on Earth". After Saturday some of the Edwin Watts Tour members might disagree. While the course was in excellent condition, it offered up a stern test for all. The Championship flight found the going tough as 75 was the low score from the 7000 yard tees. There were three 75's led by Eric Baker, John Bessette and a guest for the day, Charlie Grace. Bessette found himself 5 over after three holes, but steadied himself and posted a blistering 33 on the back nine to earn his place in the playoff. The playoff started on #10, a usually mild par 5. But a tough pin placement proved more difficult than expected as Grace was able to take the first place prize with a par. Travis Griffin grabbed fourth place with a 77. In A flight, only 2 players managed to break 80 as the Magnolia course lived up to its reputation as the toughest of the Disney courses. David Parker edged past Dennis Cargo by one shot. He shot 78 to Cargo's 79. There was a logjam at 81 as four players tied for third. John Marshall took third on the match of scorecards and Andy Baker won the fourth place prize. The best performance of the day might have come in B flight as Dan Gardner scorched the front nine with a 35. It followed an opening 45 on the back nine (he played it first). The turnaround gave him a one shot victory over flight leader Subernia Johnson who shot 81. Tim Sobitz and Bob Santee were next with 83's. Chace Petersen captured the C flight with an 87. It also pushed him into the lead in the Player of the Year race. Hosh Dietrick finished second with 88. Wayne Weaver and Brian Mariani were next with 90. The C flight produces some of the closest competition week in and week out and is fun to watch. James Rearden widened his lead in D flight with another victory. He shot 98 to ease past Brodric Johnson's 99. Alberto Esperon was another shot back with 100. More good competition! Gary Allen captured 2nd place in Senior A at Disney In senior play, Steve Maddox shot the low round of the day, a 74 to top the field in the Senior Championship flight. Senior A also went to Dave Parker's 78. Gary Allen was second. Tim Sobitz captured the Senior B flight with 83. It was one better than four players tied at 84--Kevan Brown, Greg Takacs, Chet Rakowski, and Arnie Guerra. NEXT EVENT: It doesn't get any easier as we head up the road to take on the Panther Lake course at Orange County National--on July 24.
