Excelsior Springs Golf Course hosted 45 Golfweek members. With over a $2700 purse, which included $1360 prize purse and $1355 cash game purse, AND another 4 hour and 30-minute round for most groups! Hats off to the members for getting it done and beating the thunderstorms.
In the realm of champions JR Munson looking to get a three-peat of his 2024 season but Chris Pestka from the St. Louis, MO Tour soared ahead, clinching victory with a +4 score. Munson, fighting his way for the win, parring all but 1 hole on the back nine, finishing 3 strokes behind and securing a well-deserved 2nd place.
In a nail-biting flight showdown, Brandon Gilpin swooped into the lead, trailed closely by Matthew Thorman just one stroke behind, and Troy Bailey lagging by two strokes. Thorman wrapped up his round at +9, leaving Gilpin with a clear shot at victory with a par or a chance for a playoff with Thorman with a bogey. The tension soared as Gilpin battled through the challenging par 5, but alas, he wrapped up with a double bogey, securing 2nd place at +10, while Thorman clinched 1st place at +9.
The B flight competition was neck and neck! After 12 holes, it was a thrilling triple tie for first place, with Roy Thavaraj, Darwin Alderson, and Brandon Hale all at +9. Chris Tracy was close behind at +10. Then, Hale swooped in with a birdie on the 15th hole, snagging a 3-shot lead over Alderson who settled for 3rd place at +14. Tracy carded +12, while the victory dance went to Hale with +11.
In the thrilling C Flight, the leaderboard was a rollercoaster ride! Kathy Haeffner kicked off the excitement with a +6 lead after 9 holes, closely tailed by Tim Murphy and Tim Greenwood at +8. By the 14th hole, Haeffner and Greenwood were neck and neck at +14, with Kyle Rosenbaum at +15, and Murphy and Steve Finney at +16. Finney pars holes 15-17 giving him a 2-shot lead and takes his back-to-back win with +17. Leaving a 3-way tie for 2nd place, going to a scorecard tiebreaker with the best score of the back 9 holes, Rosenbaum (45) claiming 2nd place, followed by Murphy and Greenwood (47) all finishing at +19.
D Flight, Dillon Meals soared ahead by 7 strokes, leading with +7 after 9 holes. Trailing behind were Ronnie Vargas and Steve Ellis at +14, with Brad Haeffner and Brett Hedrick close at +15. Haeffner clinched 2nd place at +19, falling just short of victory. After placing six 2nd place finishes on the Tour, Meals finally snagged his first tournament triumph at +15, earning a promotion to the C Flight! Rumor has it that he is coming for Jim McIntyre!
