Dan Holland of High Point playing in the Championship flight
arrived at Mill Creek GC with one thought in mind. Take home the trophy for
first place in the second major of the season. Winning a golf tournament at any
level is rarely easy and today was no exception. After tying Gene Queen of
Advance with 76, Dan and Gene headed out to the 10th hole for a sudden death
playoff. After both players birdied 10 they realized this wasn't going to be an
easy win. But on the next hole, Holland decided to end it and did so with his
second birdie in as many holes to finally capture the crown. Jared Jewett of
Greensboro shot 78 for third place in his return to competition in 2016.
In the A flight, Matt Ellerman of Raleigh didn't need extra
holes in order to capture his first win of the season. His 77 was good enough
to just edge out Henry Lister of Chapel Hill who came in with a 78. Kirk Crosse
of Raleigh and Hollis Peery of Fayetteville finished T3, with both carding a
79.
In order to place in the B flight today you had to break 80.
Derrick Andrews of Chapel Hill put together his best round of the year firing
76 for a 3 stroke win over a trio of players. Dave Boger of Greensboro, Duane
Fisher of McCleansville, and Kyle Adams of Winterville all shot 79 to finish in
a tie for second place.
In the C flight, Jason Beeson of Clemmons happened to have
played with the winner of last weeks event and thought to himself that looks like
fun. So all he did was shoot 84 with last weeks winner as his cart mate and
took home that first place trophy for himself. Landon Wilkes of Apex played
well shooting 85 but just couldn't quite catch Jason. Derek Marley of
Lewisville also put together a solid round of 86 to come in third.
The D flight saw Greg Dotson of Richlands make it two wins
in as many weeks by shooting an 89 for a narrow 1 stroke win over Diego Gomez
of Browns Summit. Shane Kilby of Clemmons and Vince Thompson of Mebane each shot
93 to tie for third place.
With the next event set to take place at Bryan Park in
Browns Summit, one can't help but wonder if Gomez maybe just made a statement
for the rest of the flight to come ready to play in his back yard.
