There’s not much to say about this venue – they are both great courses to play and you will play both this weekend.
The Champions Course opened in 1990 by the legendary Rees Jones. Therefore be warned, it can become a real skill challenge! It is a big time course that is always looked at and most times selected for competitive rounds to separate the real golfer from the pretenders.
When you play this course on Sunday you will be able to match your card against many of the collegiate and future PGA stars as well as The US Amateurs.
This is an 18 hole championship layout featuring 97 sand traps, numerous grass bunkers, hollows and seven holes bordering Lake Townsend.
- Runner up best new public course in the country Golf Digest 1990.
- One of the best New Public Courses in The Country - Top 10 You Can Play - Golf 1991.
- Four star rating and honored with the distinction of a GREAT VALUE - Golf Digest's Places to Play 1994-95, 1996-97
- Noted as one of the few public courses worthy to host the U.S. Open - Golf World 1992
- One of the top 12 golf courses in North Carolina - Tee Time Golf 1995
- "Best In State" Rankings - Golf Digest 1995-96, 1997-98
- Listed in "America's 500 Best Places You Can Play" - Golf Digest 1996.
- (A ranking of the 10 best public and resort courses in all 50 states, the Champions ranked third in North Carolina.)
- Listed in "America's Best Golf Courses Everyone Can Play" as the #12 best affordable golf course in the country - Golf Digest 1996.
The Players Course opened in 1974. Originally designed by George Cobb, the course was later modified by Rees Jones.
Do not be lulled asleep by Bryan Park Players Course. Be warned, the Players Course will get you if you fail to execute any shot correctly on Saturday.
Course Notes
- 18 hole championship layout featuring 79 bunkers and eight ponds/lakes.
- Bryan Park was voted Best Golf Course in the Reader's Choice -- Tops In The Triad contest by the Greensboro News and Record
- Listed in the Middle Atlantic's 100 Best Places To Place -- Washington Golf Monthly 1997, 1998
- Listed in 1998-99 Places To Play, three and a half rating -- Golf Digest 1998, 1999, 2000

Rules Review
It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score?
Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009.
I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.
There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

Questions from week #322
Al and Ben are opponents in a match.
Al has marked and lifted his ball on the green.
A. Without Al’s permission, Ben uses his putter to tap down Al’s ball mark so that it is flush with the green.
True or False, Ben is penalized one stroke under R18-3b?
B. Without Al’s permission, Ben uses his putter to tap down Al’s ball mark so that it is flush with the green and in the process, moves the ball mark.
True or False, Ben is penalized one stroke.
C. With Al’s permission, Ben uses his putter to tap down Al’s ball mark so that it is flush with the green and in the process, moves the ball mark.
True or False, Ben is penalized one stroke.
D. With Al’s permission, Ben uses his putter to tap down Al’s ball mark so that it is flush with the green and in the process, moves the ball mark.
True or False, Al is penalized one stroke. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Answers:
Generally, the Rules treat a ball marker with nearly the same reverence as a ball in play. If you think of them as one and the same, you will avoid unnecessary penalties. Note I said, nearly the same reverence. The situation covered by these four True False questions all relate to the information found in Decision 20-1/6.5.
A. False. There is no penalty as Rule 18-3b does not apply to ball-markers.
B. True. Now we have a problem as Al’s ball marker no long accurately marks the spot for his ball. In equity, this would be an amalgamation of the principles behind Rules 18-3b and R20-1. Thus a one stroke penalty to Ben for an unauthorized act which resulted in a displaced marker. The ball marker must be replaced.
C. False. Though similar to B, this time Ben has permission and it would be inequitable to penalize the player. The ball marker must be replaced.
D. False. With permission, neither side is penalized. What was not covered is what if Al tapped down his own marker and it subsequently moved? This is covered by R20-1 as well. If the movement of a ball in play or a ball marker is not directly attributable to either the specific act of marking or replacing, then the player is penalized.

Tour Weather Guidelines:
Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If the course is open, we're going to play.
The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).
In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.
Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.
If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.
