Forest Oaks Country Club
Carved from North Carolina hardwoods by noted architect Ellis Maples, Forest Oaks Country Club opened in 1962 to wide acclaim.
It was already known as one of the best tests of golf in a state known for great golf tests when it became the home course of the Greater Greensboro Open in 1977. As the golf course matured, alterations to the course were necessary, so in 2002, the job of restoring the course was assigned to Davis Love III's Love Design Group.
Working with design associate Paul Cowley, Love answered the key concerns of his touring professionals. At the same time, Love brought his understanding of what was needed to balance the demands of tournament golf with the needs of building a members course.
Greens so smooth, you'll want to remove your shoes. One thing professionals and members alike can both agree on the conditioning of the fairways and greens is superb. The fairways have bee re-sprigged with Tift Sport Bermuda grass, a strain that handles the extremes of summer heat and winter wetness better than the old local strains. As a result, the fairways can be cut lower and smoother than ever before.
Forest Oaks is first and foremost a member's course, and that was the primary motivation in Love's redesign.
Come play this great member's course that was home to the PGA for 30 years but be aware, spots will fill-up quickly.

CARLYLE GETS 'MAJOR' GOLFWEEK WIN
Mebane, NC
May 16, 2015
Greensboro's Ken Carlyle has averaged one win per season on the Golfweek Amateur Golf Tour during his 6 year Tour career.
The one goal that had eluded him during that time was to win a Major Championship event. He had come close on a number of occasions, being edged out by 1 or 2 strokes at various times.
That drought came to an end today in the A Flight at Mill Creek GC. His 76 was 2 shots better than both Raleigh's Matt Ellerman and Fayetteville's Hollis Peery.
His victory, like those of the other 4 flight winners today guarantees him a spot in the season-ending National Championship tournament held at Hilton Head in October. That event will bring together over 900 of the top Tour members from the 42 Tours nationwide.
"Finally good to get a Major", stated Carlyle as he left the parking lot.
Fayetteville's Johnny Sears will also being making that trip to Hilton Head as he vanquished the C Flight competition with a 6 shot win over Mocksville's Mark Denton. Sears, who had played in 5 events already this season, had not broken 90 himself up to today. "Johnny's a bona-fide C Flighter who finally put it all together out there", said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "He's a great guy who deserves the title".
Scott Williams of Fuquay-Varina continued his recent hot streak "on-Tour", fashioning a 78 for a single stroke win over Pinehurst's Tom Kubla. They were the only 2 B-Flighters to break 80 on the challenging course.
Elon's Tristan Lough also continued to post competitive scores in Championship Flight competition as his 76 was one shot clear of Winston-Salem's Russ Patterson who was playing in only his 2nd Tour event. As always, it should be noted that "the big boys" in the Champ Flight played from tees that were almost 400 yards longer than those of the other event competitors.
The D Flight provided some extra excitement as it had to go to a sudden-death playoff to determine a winner. Both Diego Gomez of Browns Summit and Piney Point, Maryland's Mike Charles shot 95 during regulation play forcing the extra holes. Gomez emerged victorious after 2 holes.
The Golfweek Tour will take a week off for the Memorial Day Holiday and resume play at Forest Oaks Country Club on May 30. That course is in great shape, definately the best we've seen all year, and should fill up fairly quickly. There are still many spots open.

Rules Review
It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score?
Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009.
I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.
There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

Question from week #303
In a stroke play event, on the par three 17th island green, which designates the entire water hazard with yellow stakes, Robbie has breached two Rules with his first stroke: first he hit his tee ball from just forward of the tee markers and the ball unfortunately went long, over the green, into the water hazard. A fellow competitor pointed out the fact that Robbie had not played from within the teeing ground. Robbie’s next stroke:
A. May be from the DZ, hitting three.
B. May be from the DZ, hitting five.
C. It Must be from the teeing ground, hitting three.
D. It Must be from the teeing ground, hitting five.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer
C. In stroke play, when starting the play of a hole, if a ball is played from outside the teeing ground, the stroke is cancelled. The player incurs a 2-stroke penalty and must correctly play a ball from within the teeing ground. Any strokes, including penalty strokes, associated with the wrongly teed ball do not count for the player’s score. R11-4b.

===============================================================
Tour Weather Guidelines:
Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If the course is open, we're going to play.
The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).
In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.
Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.
If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.
