Devil Ridge Country Club
|
Don’t miss playing this private course in Holly Springs.
Devil’s Ridge Country Club is always in pristine condition, is a great course to play and one that can yield some very low scores. It was built on rolling terrain with convex fairways (seldom a level lie but balls funnel to middle of the fairway).
The course is lined with towering hardwoods, and the elevated greens have moderate undulations and can be fast but true.
The signature hole is #17, a 388-yard, par 4, with an elevated green that has a twenty-foot drop off the back side. Make sure you select the correct club for your approach.
This is a perennial favorite and always bring out the best in tour member's round.
P.S. The GW Amateur Tour is playing this course over a month later in the season from last year, so the course and greens will be in even better condition.

THE GOLFWEEK AMATEUR GOLF TOUR
THE CHALLENGE REVIEW
TOP FIVE SCORES BY FLIGHT
==============================================================
|
THE GOLFWET, ER.. GOLFWEEK TOUR SLOSHES ON
Graham, NC
April 25, 2015
Weather-wise the 2015 Golfweek Amateur Golf Tour season has been no "bed-of-roses" and today was no exception at The Challenge Golf Club.
A steady light rain fell throughout the day as the year's smallest field once again had to deal with soggy fairways and cool temperatures. Even though the greens held up very well, overall scoring was still affected due to the weather conditions.
The one bright spot on the day was that every competitor who started finished a full 18 hole round.
One player who shook off the effects of the rain was Jake Britt of Wake Forest who remained undefeated in Tour play. The Championship Flight member has entered 2 events and won them both. His 76 was 2 shots better than Elon's Tristan Lough and Gibsonville's Neal Faulkner.
In A Flight action, Winston-Salem's Terry Newsome birdied 4 out of 5 consecutive holes on the back side to post a 77 for the win. He needed every one of those birdies as he edged out Roger Pinnix of Rural Hall by a single stroke.
Raleigh's Nick Slager had relatively comfortable 3 shot advantage over Mebane's Dave Mills with an 83 to secure the B Flight crown, while Mebane's Edmund Guthrie was only 1 shot in back of Slager's score as he enjoyed a 4 shot cushion in the C Flight over last week's winner - Landon Wilkes of Apex. It was Guthrie's 1st Tour win.
Top spot in the D Flight belonged to Raleigh's John Dorris with a 91. Clayton's Jeremy Willingham was runner-up with a 93.
Next week the Golfweek Tour will travel to Holly Springs to play Devils Ridge Country Club. There are a number of open spots available for that venue.
Any amateur golfer interested in competing "on-Tour" can contact Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck at 336-495-6556 or by email at behgolf@aol.com for information on how to become a Tour member.

Rules Review
It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score?
Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009.
I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.
There will be no trick questions or hidden information.
|
What’s the Score? #301
Decide which of the following results in penalty:
A. A player lifts his ball on the putting green after marking it with a small loose impediment.
B. A player replaces his ball on the putting green, leaves his ball marker in place, and putts the ball.
C. A player replaces his ball on the putting green and leaves his ball marker in place. After the ball is at rest several seconds, the ball moves off the spot. After removing his marker, he putts the ball from this new position.
D. A player replaces his ball on the putting green and leaves his ball marker in place. After the ball is at rest several seconds, the ball moves off the spot. After replacing the ball back on the original spot, and after removing his marker, he putts the ball.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answers
A. No penalty. Not a good idea if it’s windy, but the Note attached to Rule 20-1, Lifting and Marking, states: “The position of a ball to be lifted should be marked by placing a ball-marker, a small coin or other similar object...”. That “other similar object” is generously interpreted to include a loose impediment.
B. No penalty. The Rules do not require a ball marker to be lifted once a ball is replaced.
C. No penalty. Once replaced, the ball is in play and consistent with the statement from B, if the ball moves (and it was not the result of being moved accidentally by the player; moved after the player has addressed the ball; or moved by an outside agency) the ball should be played from its new at rest position.
D. Penalty: two strokes in stroke play or loss-of-hole in a match. When replaced, the ball was in play, just because the marker was left in position does not change that fact. Play it from its new spot, don’t move it back.

Tour Weather Guidelines:
Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If the course is open, we're going to play.
The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).
In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.
Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.
If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.
