Par 3 Hole #12- Over Water to a Small and Undulating Green

Pinewood Country Club

A Great Private Course in Asheboro and

Awarded 4 Stars by the Triad Golf Panel

This private course offers enough variety of terrain to challenge all of the flights within the tour. There are trees and water hazards that come into play throughout the course. However good scores can be had - just look at the defending flight winners from last year.  Will Mike Hindmarsh come out of hiding to defend his Flight title?

Over twelve years ago, the course underwent several changes. "If you played the course then, you noticed that a pretty good shot near the middle of some fairways would sometimes take an erratic bounce and roll into the rough. Many fairways were too high in the middle, sloped too severely to the sides. They fixed that and also did some mounding on the sides along with some waste bunkering to alleviate some good-shots-gone-bad situations.

In addition, they reshaped the greens areas and put in some bunkers to catch errant shots that would ordinarily be in deep trouble."Plus, they redid the greens and installed A-1. Pinehurst No. 8 has that grass, and it was put in at Pinehurst No. 2 during their recent renovation. The signature hole is #8, a 215-yard, par 3 from the back tees, requiring a tee shot over water.

You should enjoy this course for its challenge to your game and the fact it was recently rated 4 stars by the Triad Golf Panel. What a treat.

C Flight - Johnny Sears; D Flight - Ken White
(Not Pictured: A Flight Winner - Mike Meadows)

March 31, 2012

Browns Summitt, NC

The first "Major" Championship event of the 2012 Golfweek Amateur Golf Tour season was contested today at Bryan Park GC on The Players Course.

Five Tour members earned a spot in the National Finals that are held in Hilton Head, SC in October by winning their respective flights in today's competition.  If their scores today were any indication, those 5 stand a good chance of being very competitive when those Finals are played.  All five flights produced strong scores by their respective winners.

Dan Holland of High Point posted a 1-under 71 to take the top spot in the Championship Flight.  Holland, a multiple winner "on-Tour" had a relatively comfortable 4 stroke cushion over Fayetteville's Scott Blackstone. Blackstone is in his first year of competition with the Tour and is also a past winner this season.

It took more than 18 holes to determine a winner in the A Flight as Advance's Mike Meadows and Gibsonville's Neal Faulkner both posted regulation 73s to stand atop the flight. Meadows was able to end the sudden death playoff after only 1 hole to secure the win. "This is going to be Mike's last win in the A Flight for the immediate future", stated Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "We both agreed that it was time for him to challenge his game in the Championship Flight".

Winston-Salem's Terry Newsome shot a sizzling 75 to edge a trio of golfers - Greensboro's Robin Gomez, Raleigh's Spurling Cook, and Danville, VA's Wayne Ferrell - by 2 strokes in the B Flight. It's rare for more than 2 players in the B Flight to break 80 in a given event, but today no fewer than 9 members pulled off the feat.

Johnny Sears shot one of his best scores in the past 3 years "on-Tour" with an 83 that captured top honors in the C Flight. Sears was 2 strokes clear of Tour "rookie" Brad Smith of Winston-Salem.

Ken White's victory in the D Flight was no different than the rest of the flights - if you wanted to win, you had to go low. White's 89 was quite low by past Tour history, but he needed every good shot he hit as Greg Green of Apex was only 1 back with an even 90.

The Tour will be taking a week off for the Easter holiday, but will be back in action at Pinewood Country Club in Asheboro on April 14. Any amateur golfer interested in playing in that event can call Hallenbeck at 336-495-6556, or email him at behgolf@aol.com.

How to beat a [very] BAD economy

If you are tired of dealing with the current state of the
economy, here's something you should know:

The surest path to success isn't in learning how to navigate
through a terrible economy. The smarter path is to discover
how you can "create your OWN economy..." where YOU make the
rules!

The fact is, this system is setup for normal people to FAIL.

The clues are obvious and are everywhere.

What isn't so obvious, is that you don't have to settle for
the mess you see out in this economy.

There IS an alternative.

And this
new video reveals what that is.

Now I have to warn you, at the end of this video is an odd
twist unlike anything you've probably seen before.

If you do nothing else today, be sure you watch through to
the end.

It's clear that this guy in the video is on a mission. And
from his previous record of successes, it seems like he is
pretty much unstoppable.

Watch this video now.

Rules Review
It has been suggested that there should be  a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve.  So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score?   Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009. I will include one each week.  You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.   There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

If you do not have a Rules of Golf book handy, go to: usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions

Question from week #139

Jerry has hit his tee ball into an area of dense, thick rough.

Good news: when he arrives in the area he finds his ball sitting on top of a dense clump of fescue, like it is sitting on a tee. Unfortunately when he addresses the ball his ball moves vertically downward into the clump. Jerry is then observed to lift the ball and attempt to reset it on top of the clump. It will not stay on top of the grass, so he moves to an adjacent spot, just behind the original spot where it will stay on top of the grass and then makes a stroke at the ball.

For his actions, Jerry is:

A. Not penalized

B. Penalized one stroke.

C. Penalized two strokes.

D. Penalized three strokes.

Answer

B. Penalized one stroke. When Jerry addressed the ball and it moved vertically downward, he breached Rule 18-2b, is penalized one stroke and must replace the ball. (See Definition: Move.)

This means he must put the ball back on top of the clump of grass. But, the grass will no longer support the weight of his ball, thus the lie has been altered. We have a Rule for this situation: Rule20-3b, Lie of Ball to be Placed or Replaced Altered. A reading of that Rule tells us, in this situation, Jerry must find the nearest spot most similar to the original, that is not more than one club length away and no closer to the hole. (See Rule 20-3b(i).)

What Jerry was observed doing was correct. The Rules do not require Jerry to notify his opponent, marker or fellow competitor as to what steps he is taking under the Rules, but it might not be a bad idea to say something in order to avert unwanted questions.

Tour Weather Guidelines:

Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses:  If the course is open, we're going to play.

The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather.  (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).

In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.

Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office.  The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.

If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.
