2012 GOLFWEEK
SATURDAY, MARCH 17
FOREST OAKS COUNTRY CLUB

-----

Carved from North Carolina hardwoods by noted architect Ellis Maples, Forest Oaks Country Club opened in 1962 to wide acclaim.

It was already known as one of the best tests of golf in a state known for great golf tests when it became the home course of the Greater Greensboro Open in 1977. As the golf course matured, alterations to the course were necessary, so in 2002, the job of restoring the course was assigned to Davis Love III's Love Design Group.

Working with design associate Paul Cowley, Love answered the key concerns of his touring professionals. At the same time, Love brought his understanding of what was needed to balance the demands of tournament golf with the needs of building a members course.

Greens so smooth, you'll want to remove your shoes. One thing professionals and members alike can both agree on the conditioning of the fairways and greens is superb. The fairways have bee re-sprigged with Tift Sport Bermuda grass, a strain that handles the extremes of summer heat and winter wetness better than the old local strains. As a result, the fairways can be cut lower and smoother than ever before.

Forest Oaks is first and foremost a member's course, and that was the primary motivation in Love's redesign.

Come play this great member's course that was home to the PGA for 10 years.

3-MAN PLAYOFF DECIDES FLIGHT IN

GOLFWEEK AMATEUR TOUR EVENT

Photo by Rob Andrews - GolfWeek Amateur Winners at Bryan Park (L to R)

Champion - Dan Holland, A Flight - Brian Carson, B Flight - Robin Gomez, C Flight - Steven Bell, D Flight - Issac Kinnard

All you had to do to get into a 1st place playoff in the C Flight of the Golfweek Amateur Golf Tour event held at Bryan Park on the Championship course was shoot a 90 in regulation. That's exactly what 3 Tour members did today. Steven Bell and Shirral Davis, both from Raleigh, and Reidsville's Jay Zimmerman put their clubs back on a cart and headed out to Hole #10 to start the sudden death affair.

Zimmerman snapped his tee shot and effectively knocked himself out of contention as both Bell and Davis went on to par the hole. Bell then "out-steadied" Davis, producing another par on the 501 yard, par 5 11th to secure the win. For Bell, a Tour veteran who is no stranger to winning "on-Tour", it was his 1st victory of the 2012 campaign.

Danville's Brian Carson, who was making his Tour debut in the A Flight, also had to go beyond 18 holes to take top Flight honors. Both Carson and Kernersville's Billy Lankford posted regulation 77s, necessitating a tie breaker. Carson ended the drama quickly with a par on the 1st extra hole. Greensboro's Cuong Ton was 1 shot back in 3rd.

Robin Gomez has been dominant in the B Flight so far this year. Today was no different as he secured 1st place with an 81. Gomez was 2 strokes clear of Kernersville's Michael Hawkins who was playing his first event in the B Flight after receiving a "battlefield promotion" from C Flight play. "Mike owned the C Flight from the beginning of this season and obviously, based on his showing today, is going to be a force to be reckoned with in the B Flight as well", stated Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck.

The Championship Flight had a much tougher assignment today than the other 4 flights as they played from the Blue (back) Tees, which were about 400 yards longer than that played by the rest of the field. Despite that, Dan Holland of High Point still posted the best score of the day with a 76, edging both last week's winner at Salem Glen, Scott Blackstone of Fayetteville and Kernersville's Park Williams by a single stroke.

The D Flight saw another Tour rookie break through for his 1st Tour win as Issac Kinnard beat fellow Fayetteville resident George Greer by 3 strokes - 93 to 96. Siler City's Carlos Simpson took 3rd place with a 99. "Just break 100 and you're 'in the money' in the D Flight", quipped Hallenbeck.

Next stop for the Tour will be Forest Oaks Country Club next Saturday, March 10th. There are spots available for that event. Any amateur golfer interested in playing "on-Tour" can contact Hallenbeck at 336-495-6556.

Rules Review
It has been suggested that there should be  a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve.  So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score?   Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009. I will include one each week.  You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.   There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

If you do not have a Rules of Golf book handy, go to: usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions

26-1 . Relief for Ball in Water Hazard

It is a question of fact whether a ball that has not been found after having been struck toward a water hazard is in the hazard. In the absence of knowledge or virtual certainty that a ball struck toward a water hazard, but not found, is in the hazard, the player must proceed under Rule 27-1.

If a ball is found in a water hazard or if it is known or virtually certain that a ball that has not been found is in the water hazard (whether the ball lies in water or not), the player may under penalty of one stroke:

a. Proceed under the stroke and distance provision of Rule 27-1 by playing a ball as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played (see Rule 20-5); or

b. Drop a ball behind the water hazard, keeping the point at which the original ball last crossed the margin of the water hazard directly between the hole and the spot on which the ball is dropped, with no limit to how far behind the water hazard the ball may be dropped; or

c. As additional options available only if the ball last crossed the margin of a lateral water hazard, drop a ball outside the water hazard within two club-lengths of and not nearer the hole than (i) the point where the original ball last crossed the margin of the water hazard or (ii) a point on the opposite margin of the water hazard equidistant from the hole.

Understand the difference between a lateral water hazard versus a water hazard.  When proceeding under this Rule, the player may lift and clean his ball or substitute a ball.

Tour Weather Guidelines

Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses:  If the course is open, we're going to play.

The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather.  (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).

In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.

Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office.  The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.

If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.

EcoloBlue - produces Atmospheric Water Generators that produce pure water from the humidity in the air. Incredible product and has optional solar panels.  I am sure even the engineers would appreciate this one.
